MOUTH CAROLINA, THURSDAY. DECEMBER 19, 1968 Each Miss tries to get her’s shorter, As to dame fashion she bends. But it’s ‘bottoms up’ to the Mini Skirt— It seems they’ve reached the end. I can almost see reason for the Mini Skirt in the summer time, but to even look at the girls wearing them in cold weather, ac tually gives me a chill. I’ve always felt sorry for little girls who go out in the cold weather wearing short skirts and socks, but then again, I dislike cold weather anyhow. Have you noticed that during the Christmas shop ping season that most everyone you meet on the street has a smile on their face? Let me tell you that if you feel lonesome, just go down town these days. You’ll see so many people whom you know and many whcm you haven’t seen for a long time. Perhaps you can stop for just a few minutes and have a cup of coffee with them. You may not get much shop ping dene, but your heart will feel lighter. One of the most exciting things for me at Christ mastime is the receiving of Christmas cards, especially those from far off places. I enjoy getting cards from N. With friends and good health, who wants more for Christmas? Buff and I were compli mented this week at our regular meeting of the Eastern Star. During the meeting the worthy matron, Mrs. .Catherine Robey, gave a program based on the “This Is Your Life" theme, reviewing our year as worthy matron and patron. Because of illness last year, our term of office was interrupted. How ever this sincere honor given us was deeply ap preciated. I notice that some scoundrel has torn away one part of the new wood en fence around St. Paul’s Churchyard. I just can’t imagine anyone being so onery. Isn’t the Christmas tree pretty on the corner of Church and Broad Streets? We went fishing last Friday afternoon for a little while up Queen Anne’s Creek, but with no results. At one of our particular fishing spots we found ice over the creek, so we had to turn around and come back. Well, we fished on New Year’s Day one year, maybe we’ll do it again this year. Saturday afternoon was such a good time to stay home and bake cookies, and I did just that, while Buff picked out pecans and watched numerous foot ball games. Here’s one of the recipes I used and the cookies are delicious: Cherry Winkies Sift together 2'£ cup* flour, 1 tsp. baking pow der and 'i tsp. soda. Cream \ cup butter and 1 cup sugar. Add 2 eggs, 2 tbsp. milk and 1 tsp. va nilla. Blend in dry ingre dients and mix well. Add 1 cup chopped pecans and 1/3 cup Marschino cher ries chopped and drained. Drop by teaspoon in 2 Vfe cups of crushed corn flakes, toss lightly to coat and Shape into balls. (I also rolled some cookies in crushed pecans and shredded coco nut). Top with pieces of red and green cherries. Here’s another recipe sent from Mrs. L. J. Hines of Turkey, N. C. By the way of my friend, Edna Barnhill of Winston- Salem: Holiday Fruit Balls 1 lb. each graham crack er crumbs, candied pine apple, chopped, cherries chopped, raisins and marsh, mallows. 3 lbs. chopped nuts. 1 can evaporated milk. 1 stick butter. 1 can flaked coconut. In sauce pan melt mar garine and marshmallows in milk over low heat, stirring constantly. Mix together remaining ingre dients, except coconut and pour milk mixture over it. Stir until well mixed and shape into lVz inch balls and roll in coconut. Makes 200. A FEW HINTS Fruit stains can be re moved from washable ma terials by rubbing the stained portion with pow- 1 dered borax and then pour ing boiling water through ■ the fabric. Dip stewed pi unes into melted marshmallows and then in shredded coconut for a dessert treat. Spray candles with hair spray or spray starch and while wet, sprinkle them with glitter—pretty holi day candles! Art Or Utility? A CWA artist was com missioned to paint murals in the reptile house at the Natural Zoo. He turned to admire his work and discovered an energetic li/ard climbing up a tree trunk neatly painted tin the side of his cage. "Come look!" shouted the artist to the zoo direc tor.
