THE GREEKS HAD A
WORD FOR IT
The longer I work in the
field of mental health the
more I become convinced
of the importance of main
taining balance in our
lives. The Greeks, you
will remember, referred to
this as the Golden Mean.
The man or woman who
exaggerates one important
area of life to the detri
ment of others is almost
assuredly going to suffer
in peace of mind and well-

being.
The individual who lets
his work become the cen
ter of living, who ignores
his need for revitalizing
play, recuperative rest and
loving family relationships
is asking for trouble.
The woman who mar
tyrizes herself by devoting
her entire energy and
working-day to her family
is limiting the scope of her
life and may well encount
er difficult problems when
she has launched her child
ren from the home or be
comes a widow.
So, too, the play and
rest areas of living may be
exaggerated to the detri
ment of well-being. We
all know playboys who are
interested only in the stim
ulations and pleasures of
life. Eventually, these pale
and living becomes pur
poseless.
And there are those who
are interested only in get
ting by with as little ef
fort, and as much ease, as
possible. Frequently, they
not only cut corners but
also legalities.
The full life, the enrich
ed life requires adequate
measures of all these ele
ments. But they must be
kept in equilibrium for
good mental health.
The parent and spouse
who doesn’t get enough
sleep affects not only his
own well-being but that of
his immediate family also.
Often we become irritable,
short-tempered, demanding
when we don’t rest suffi
ciently. We become hard
to get along with. Our
memory isn’t as efficient
as it should be. We be
come nervous and easily
upset. Women, especially,
seemingly need those eight
hours of sound sleep.
Yes, for our own mental
health and... the mental
health of our families each
of us needs engrossing
work, adequate fun and re
laxation and rewarding
family interaction. But we
exaggerate any of these at
the cost of our mental
health. How about you?
Any exaggerations? Any
omissions? How’s your
mental health?
Are you a balanced per
sonality? Are you help
ing your children learn the
value of balance?
To everything there is a
season, and a time to every
purpose under heaven.

Planning Ahead
C. W. Overman, County
Extension chairman, em
phasizes the importance of
planning but cautions
against unrealistic plans.
Quit looking for the mir
acle prescriptions to pro
duce 200 bushels of com
or 4,000 pounds of tobacco
if only half these yields is
the best record for the
farm. Instead, concentrate
on building soil fertility
and study the other re
quirements of the plant.
High fertility is good busi
ness for any crop and the
Soil Testing Division of the
North Carolina Department
of Agriculture is always
ready to suggest the need
ed plant nutrients to estab
lish good fertility levels in
your soil.
An orderly planning pro
cess helps to identify the
weak links in any program.
The first and very im
portant step is the selec
tion of a rotation or crop
ping system that makes
each acre produce the
greatest income. Idle land
is a production factor sit
ting in the shade—it’s ex
pensive.
Second, maintain high
fertility levels. Keep an
up-to-date inventory of the
fertility levels and lime
needs by a systematic
schedule of soil testing. In
structions, sampling sup
plies and the test itself are
offered without charge by
the Soil Testing Division.
Use all the fertilizer Which
research has shown the
crops can possibly use.
This is one of the cheapest
forms of crop insurance
available.
Third, plant the very
best seed obtainable of the
right variety at the right
time in the right amounts
to use all the sunshine, wa.
ter and nutrients available
to each acre of space. In
many cases these are sat
isfied only by a break with
traditional methods.
Fourth, control weeds,
insects and diseases and
adapt all cultural practices
to fit the needs of the
plant rather than the ma
chine or other, extraneous
factors. Planting, cultiva
tion and harvesting equip
ment that is not adapted
or is improperly adjusted
; costs too much to continu
ally ignore.
Fifth, harvest, store, mar
; ket or use all the pro
-1 ducts of the land. Grain
• lasses from the combine or
unused pasture crops are
more epensive than if they
■ had not been produced.
In summary. Mr. Over
i man reminds that if the
stage is set with the right
plants, a high level of fer
i tility in the soil and a con
■ trol program for weeds, in
sects and diseases, higher
yields are obtainable

NEW YORK There’s j
good news for husbands '

Christmas but are hesitant i
because they think it lacks ;
glamor.
Cookware doesn’t lac k j
glamor anymore.
Today’s pots and pans
are no longer a necessary
evil that must be hidden
before dinner guests a%
rive. Cookware designers
have changed them from \
unsightly kitchen drudges
into attractive and func

with pride at any dinner
table.
Color has come into
cookware in a big way.
Today, high-fashion alum
inum cookware compares
in decorative value with
any kind of home furnish

The craze for color has
prompted manufacturers to
add a pineapple hue to
their line. They are also
coming out with colors
called pimento, avocado
and nutmeg.
Other colors include or

various reds and blues,
charcoal grey, apple green
and white and black.
