19th Century
Tree Displayed
A Christmas tree deck
ed with all the trimmings
of the 19th century is giv
ing a festive look to the
lobby of the Museum of
the Albemarle during the
month of December. Cook
ies, bows, popcorn and
cranberry chains, and
wooden toys cover the
boughs of this old fashion
ed tree.
Small beeswax tapers in
tiny tin holders, counter-
Oalanced with a silver
walnut, add both scent and
light, while cookies of
every description pull down
the branches. Some of the
gingerbread men and sugar
cookies look good enough
to eat. Other cookies have
been carefully cut and
painted to resemble wise
men, angels and toys.
Plush red velvet bows
and fancy wrapped pack
ages give a rich look to
the tree topped by the
cornhusk angel of an Al
bemarle craftsman.
The tree stands at the
entrance of the “Toys of
Christmas Past’’ exhibit.
Heralded by a brass weath
ervane angel, this delight
ful toy display, containing
more than 100 toys from
years ago, will be shown
at the Museum of the Al
bemarle during the month
iif December. Everyone is
invited to add an old
fashioned note to their
Christmas this year by vis
aing the Museum of the
Albemarle.
Her Wasted Life
As he Was under orders
to go abroad, the ardent
young soldier begged his
girl friends to marry him
at once.
Rather worried about it,
the girl sought advice from
the maiden aunt who
brought her up.
"Tell me, what you’d do,
aunty," she asked. “I sup
pose you think it wouldn’t
Oe sense to marry because
I'm so young?"
"Well, dear," said her
aunt, "I dunno! If I had
my time over again, I
think I’d get married be
fore I was old enough to
have sense not to."
Make Church - Going A Habit ...
A NEW HEAVEN AND A NEW EARTH
International Sunday School Lesson for Dec. 29
Memory Selection: “He said unto me, it is
done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning
and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst
of the fountain of tihe water of life freely.”—
Revelation 21:6.
Lesson Text: Revelation 21-22.
As we study our lesson for today, it is per
haps symbolical that the Christmas season is
behind us, and ahead of us lies a brand New
Year —on the pages of which we, ourselves, can
inscribe our destiny.
For the words of John bring home to us, gra
phically, the vision of things to come, remind
ing us that, just beyond our journeying in this
lies a blessed experience of joy for those
of us who accept, unreservedly, the doctrines of
Christ, and apply them diligently to our daily
lives.
John asserts, unequivocably, that God dwells
with men. He dwelt with the children of Israel
as they journeyed for forty years toward the
Premised Land; He watched over them, giving
them leaders of His own choosing, in His wis
dom; He saw them through many hardships and
disillusionments; He chastised them for their
sins; He rejoiced in their victories. He was, in
fact, intimately concerned with each and every
one of them.
He still is intimately concerned with each and
every one of us today. Each and every tragedy
that befalls us is a lesson for us at God’s hands;
it is a testing of our spirit, of our faith—it is a
strengthening of us. And to sustain our faith,
He has given us words of comfort, of reassur
ance. These words are contained between two
covers—the covers of the Bible. No matter
what calamities befall us, there are words in
the Book that sustain us. No matter what joys
become ours, there are passages that humble us.
Comparisons are often quoted as being “odi
ous.” Such is not so in God’s language John
depicts, two cities—one (Babylon) riddled by sin
and self-seeking; one (the new Jerusalem) —a
bride, adorned for her husband. Babylon, the
city of earth, is the city of death. Jerusalem,
the city of hope, the city of perfect brother
hood, of perfect worship. It is the city of light,
of perfect life, of perfect dominion. It is to
symbolize the complete fulfillment oC the teign
of Christ.
The second coming of Christ is the theme of
these chapters in Revelation. When—and how—
this will come about is still a mystery—but it
is a PROMISE and mankind will do well to
prepare for it.
For the logical way of Christians to affirm
their belief in the glorious second coming of
Christ is to live their lives each day as if it
were their last day on earth, that they may not
be denied entrance into the new and holy Jeru
salem—for it is written that nothing that defiles

The old year wanes. The last sands
trickle down the hourglass as the old man
totters into irrevocable past and a lusty
infant year begins.
Bells ring in church steeples, confetti
rains, horns blow. People sing and shout
and maybe shed a tear. Cries of “Happy
New Year” fill the ears and fall on happy
hearts, or sad.
To some, the old year brought joy and
happiness. To others it held sadness and
despair. Thus, men greet the new year
differently; some with mockery, some with
resolution, still others with a smile.
Whatever your feelings about the year
ahead, there is one way to be sure of its
promise. God is the source of all goodness.
Make Him and His Church a part of your
life and you will find the strength and
inspiration to make each day prosper.
The sum of its days shapes the year.

THE CHURCH FOR ALL . . . ALL FOR THE CHURCH
The Church is the greatest factor on earth for the building of
character and good citizenship. It is a storehouse of spiritual
values. Without a strong Church, neither democracy nor civili
zation can survive. There are four sound reasons why every
person should attend services regularly and support the Church.
They are: (1) For his own sake. (2) For his children's sake.
(3) For the sake of his community and nation. (4) For the
sake of the Church itself, which needs his moral and material sup
port. Plan to go to church regularly and read your Bible daily.
