A smile is my magic formula, I try to use each day; I’ll guarantee that it will help To make a MERRY CHRISTMAS day I can think of so many ways to wish each of you a Merry Christmas, but none of my words will rhyme, but then I know my limitations, when it comes to poetry and be side that my mind is in a tizzy right now—so please try to smile and be happy if only for this one day— your smile just may make someone else’s day a lit tle blighter. Someone sent me a treasured note this week and it certainly gave me a boost, just when I CLINIC CANCELED The Orthopedic Clinic held at the Health De partment in Elizabeth City has been canceled for the month of December. The next clinic will be held January 28, 1969. vSm** ' C \ W&\ <***£ <V* V a. ’ .ulff’ &s*&&*' _J&SP i "' BROAD STREET BULLETIN Kate needed it most. The note was unsigned, but that doesn’t matter either, and I do thank the friend who sent it. Don’t forget to feed the birds on Christmas Day— remember, they, too, are one of God’s creations, bringing beauty and song in our lives. We are now enjoying the red birds, blue jays, the yellow grosbeaks, mocking birds, finches and a Baltimore oriole came to visit us recently. So, even if it’s only the lowly sparrow, feed them and soon you’ll have more visitors. Here’s a different recipe for Cranberry Sauce: 1 lb. fresh cranberries. 2 cups sugar. 2 cups fresh apples (diced). THE CHOWAN HERALD. EDENTON. NORTH CAROLINA. THURSDAY. DECEMBER 2t, IH*. Dash of cinnamon. 2 cups water. Bring water and sugar to a rapid boil, drip in washed cranberries and apples. Boil slowly until cranberries pop open. Helpful Hints You can make a dispos able dustpan by cutting an aluminum foil pan in half. Badly soiled tiles can be cleaned by using one tablespoon of turpentine in a gallon of water. For fluffier, longer last ing topping use confection ers sugar instead of granu lated sugar to sweeten whipped cream. Green peas will not shrink if a lettuce leaf is cooked with them. Ladies, don’t let your handbag rub against your fur coat. It’s one of the major causes of wear. To give extra zip to po tato salad, add one-half cup vinegar to the water when boiling the potatoes. Try s Herald Classified! Appeal Is Made In TB Campaign The big day comes to morrow when the local Christmas Seal Campaign reaches its high point with “Do-It-Day” the day for putting good intentions in to action and mailing in a Christmas Seal contribu tion to the Eastern Tuber culosis and Respiratory Disease Association, Box 542, Greenville. “Do-It-Day serves as a reminder,” says Edmund H. Harding, campaign chairman, “that while we are all busy preparing for a wonderful holiday sea son, there are those among us who need help because of TB and other respira tory diseases. And “Do-It- Day” gives emphasis to the fact that the success of the association’s program depends largely upon the response of our Christmas Seal appeal.” Christmas Seal contribu tions are used for: Health and public education, sup port of medical education and research, patient ser vices, community services, workshop scholarships for professional and non-pro fessional workers, educa tional materials for dis tribution to schools, col leges, libraries, health de partments, TV and radio stations, newspapers, etc. Attaching Pay Is Last Effort Some people would have you -believe that revenue officers (collect ors of delinquent federal taxes) are sadistic in at taching the wages of tax payers. This belief, how ever, fails to touch base with the facts. Any reve nue officer will tell you this: Attaching wages to satisfy overdue taxes is the most loathsome part of his work. When a revenue officer levies on the wages of a taxpayer, he creates dis taste in the eyes of the taxpayer and the employer as well. This is the re sult of levies; but it does not reflect the desire of the revenue officer or the service 'he represents. On top of this result, with each levy he serves a mountain of paper work is created, not just for IRS, but for the taxpayer’s em ployer who is already red in the face with his nor mal payroll work. Yes, the serving of levies is a business in which everybody loses: First, the taxpayer, then the taxpayer’s employer and his government. - 4 / fHH "... AND ALL THIS TOO!"—Postmaster James M. Bond is shown here checking in some of the 257 bags of sale catalogs which arrived at the local post office for delivery prior to Christmas. This added to the burden of mail men but all were delivered on time. FUNERAL HELD FOR FRED COX DEC. 19 Funeral services were held for Fred Cox on De cember 18 at Providence Baptist Church at 2 P.
