Some people think it’s a “let down” after Christ mas, but it means to me the thought that NOW I can look forward to Spring. Right now, it means four layers of clothing to get comfortable and the dread of catching the “flu.” By the way, our friends, Jim my and Pauline Oglesby are at last recuperating, after a very bad bout with the flu bug. There cer tainly is a lot of sickness and I blame it all on win ter! I read where a French doctor claims that being in love is the best immunity against colds— that should help a lot of us! Well, the Bufflap house hold will be alive this week, as my two grand children will come with their nurse for a week, then on to New York, where they will live. I’m glad that moving from Texas to New York gives them a reason for letting the children visit us and this diversion will keep us from being bored (except that we never are). You know, there’s a few very special ladies whom you may meet down town who will always brighten your day with their cheer ful faces and happy smiles. She says it’s a “yummy” treat: One 8-oz. pkg. dates. Vi cup cocoanut. Vi cup granulated sugar 4 tbsps. butter. 1 slightly beaten egg. Pinch of salt. Combine above in heavy skillet Cook over low heat for about 10 minutes. Set aside a few minutes to cool. Then add 1 tsp. va nilla, V 2 cup chopped nuts and IVz cups rice crispies. These cookies or candies can be formed into small shapes to fit the occasion, rolled into colored sugar or decorative trims. A FEW HINTS Store your shoes in cardboard boxes, marking tlhe outside of each box with crayons in matching color of your shoes and they can be easily iden tified. For a crisp, shiny crust off a pie, pour a cup of ice water over entire crust be fore placing it in the oven. Tilt pie so that water will run off, then bake. A. Benson, manager. For the past three years Ashley has been with the Edenton Savings & Loan Association, where he serv ed as treasurer. A life-long resident of .Chowan County, Ashley has been a leader in num erous civic activities. At present he is first vice president of the Edenton Jaycees, vice president of the Barker House Associa tion and vic.e president of the local Varsity Club. He attended High Point College as a pre-engineer ing student after being graduated from John A. Holmes High School here. Ashley is married to the former Miss Ingred Niel son and they have one daughter. “We are extremely pleas ed that Ashley has become a member of our organiza tion,” Benson said in the announcement. “We are confident that he will help all of us at First Na tional render even greater service to the people of Edenton and the Chowan area " Garden Club Hears Smith The Garden of Eden Club met at the home of Mrs. William W. Binde man Tuesday. A breath of springtime was introduced in the midst of winter, when John Smith, local florist, presented several attrac tive designs, using spring flowers Discussion was held on various spots in Edenton to be beautified.
