PAGE TWO-C Technical Education On Increase When the horse was king of the highway and Dalton’s atom was indivis ible, when America was a new country with geo graphic frontiers to ex plore and win, when brain and brawn were of equal importance to the nation, going to college was not necessary to insure suc cess in one’s chosen occu pation. But everything has changed. Sixty thousand horses thrust jet airliners across the sky, Dalton’s atom htts been divided and its energy released to help and possibly destroy man, America’s geographic frontiers no longer exist to challenge the adventur ous spirit of people. How ever, there are many oc cupational frontiers to ex cite the imagination of young people. One of the most challenging of these is technical education. What do we mean by technical education? How is it different from voca tional education or the traditional liberal arts edu cation? Vocational educa tion is designed to develop job skills and prepare a person for a particular oc cupation. The traditional liberal arts education does not develop job skills as such, but has produced many outstanding busi nessmen, politicians and humanists. Technical edu cation is designed to pre pare the learner to earn a living in an occupation. in which the laws of science and technology are ap jf j |f funeral home I —-j edenton. nc. Jj = .. Technical education can be said to be vocational in objective and technical in content. This type of training prepares a person for a technical occupation for which graduation from a four-year college is not required. The two- year community - junior college technical education pro gram is generally suffici ent to enable a graduate to secure a good job with a promising future. Technical education grad uates work in many occu pational areas including federal service, research and developmental areas, production, management and service and sales of consumer products. With in any of these areas he may work directly with engineers taking their con ceptual designs and trans forming them into draw ings or models of a pro duct. As can be seen, the engineering technician is an important and indis pensable member of the engineering team and in dustrial organization as a whole. The future for engi neering technicians is in deed bright. A recent sur vey made by the office of the U. S. Department of Labor clearly indicates that the demand for train ed technicians will far ex ceed the supply for years to come. This is further supported by a study com pleted by the National Science Foundation which six yean? As a matter of bet, electricity it one thing that actually costs less than it did in 1841. NORTH CAROLINA, THURSDAY, JANUARY 11. IMI. concluded that by 1970 the nation’s industries will need more than 1,262,000 tra : ned technicians. The College of the Al bemarle offers occupation al training in several tech nical areas. They include: Drafting and design, elec tronics technology, secre tarial administration and teacher aide technology. These programs are two year courses of study, and upon completion of the re quirements, the student is awarded the Associate of Applied Science Degree. Most of the technical edu cation graduates have a variety of job opportuni ties from which they may make a selection. It has been pointed out that there is and will con tinue to be a need for trained technicians and that training is available for those persons desiring it. The needs are many; the opportunities, unlimit ed for those who make the right choice. Minis, Go-Carts Covered By Law RALEIGH That cute little mini-bike or go-cart that Santa brought for Christmas becomes a full fledged motor vehicle when it ventures onto a street or highway, according to the Department of Motor Ve hicles. The department, says Commissioner Ralph How land, has received a large number of inquiries and an increasing number of com plaints regarding the small motorized bikes and carts. “Our primary concern, of course, is the safety of the children who are op erating these vehicles,” Howland said. “Frequent ly, they have nowhere to ride but on the public streets or highways where it is extremely dangerous and usually illegal.” The commissioner stress ed the point that unless both the driver and the vehicle are licensed and unless the vehicle is equip- - ped with all required saf ety devices, it is violating a number of laws the sec ond it hits the street. “These vehicles are not toys,” Howland said. “They are motor vehicles and, when operated on a public street, they are subject to all motor vehicle laws. Parents who have permit ted their children to pos sess these vehicles have a very clear responsibility to make certain their child ren understand that their vehicles can be dangerous and that they must be op erated within the law.” Make Church - Going A Habit ... HOW PERSONS REACT TO JESUS International Sunday School Lesson for Jan. 19 Memory Selection: “The preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.” I Corinthians 1:18. Lesson Text: Mark 2:1 to 3:6. The lesson we study today reveals Jesus con tinuing in His ministry—healing and teaching. It also draws a sharply defined picture of how all sorts of people, from every walk of life, re acted to Him. It points up, with great clarity, that those with the right attitude in their re lationship with Him were enriched by the con tact, while those who had the same opportuni ties for contact and learning, but who did not avail themselves of their opportunities, left His presence virtually “empty-handed.” Truly, what a man thinks of Jesus determines what he receives from Him. If there is any doubt in our minds on this score, we have only to bring insight to bear on the events as related in our text for today. Jesus had already made His presence in Ca pernaum once before. Talk about this authori tative stranger had spread over the'city, as a result of His first visit there, to teach and heal. Therefore, upon His second appearance, even greater crowds gathered—some came from curi osity—some came because of dire need, and a pulsating faith that He could help either them or their loved ones, in their extremities of suffering. Such an one was the man suffering from pal sy; such were the friends who carried him to where Christ was, and—undeterred by their in ability to get their friend to Christ because of the press of the multitude around Him they applied themselves to removing the roof of the house where Christ was, letting the man on his bed down through the aperture they had so laboriously brought about, so that he lay at Christ’s feet. Jesus, as close as He was to the inner work ings of mankind, did not fail to perceive the faith so unashamedly bared before the assembled multitude, and He responded to it, as those familiar with the Christlike nature had come to expect. He cured the man of his sickness; He answered the naked longing in the eyes raised to His. He fulfilled the faith exhibited by the little band of devoted friends who had labored in the invalid’s behalf. The power to forgive sin and to heal was in the person of Christ; it was made available to all men through their faith, as, indeed, it still is today. Whether or not we avail ourselves of the blessings that Christ brought to us so long ago, depends entirely on us. It depends on our re sponse to Him. If we do not respond at all (or if we merely respond with criticism and suspi cion, as did the scribes in the temple) then we are—like the scribes—liable to be empty-handed. On the other hand, if we respond joyously and Continued on Page 3 BELK - TYLER’S EDENTON’S SHOPPING CENTER W. E. SMITH GENERAL MERCHANDISE “Rocky Hock" PHONE 221-4031 EDENTON M. G. BROWN CO., INC.
