Towe, president of Towe Motor Company of Hertford, is one of more than 3,20 Q Dodge dealers throughout the country who will be participating in the NBC television an nual “Academy of Pro fessional Sports Awards" special show February 19 from 10 to 11 P. M. “I’m very proud to be associated with this show,” said Towe, “it’s the only one way to honor out standing pro athletes in major American sports.” “The athletes are chos en by their fellow players in the American and Na tional Football Leagues, American and National Baseball Leagues, National Basketball Association, the National Hockey League, golf and horse racing,” he continued. Towe also pointed out that the players cannot vote for themselves, nor for teammates. “Even persons who are not sports fans will enjoy this program,” Towe point ed out. “We not only are honoring the world's fin est athletes, but we have same of the biggest names in the entertainment world who are sports enthusiasts presenting awards. Towe went on' to point out that Kim Novak, Bob Hope, Jack Benny, Danny Kaye and Art Linkletter are a few of the celebrities who will take part in the presentations. Donald Ange Joins Arthur Smith Twenty-five years ago The Beacon carried a news item concerning a five year-old boy who lost the sight in both eyes in an accident at his home near by. Long years ago that youngster learned to accept his handicap and last month landed a full-time job with a nationally known musical entertain ment group. Donald Ward Ange, now 30, has mastered several musical instruments and joined the Arthur Smith Show, one of North Caro lina’s top country, western and religious groups call ed The Crackerjacks. Ange, a resident of Char lotte, had been recording with The Crackerjacks for two years while holding down another job full time, and January 1 he signed a contract to become a full time member of that group, headed by Arthur Smith. ' TV Show at 7:30 which is taped in Charlotie. The show is seen locally over Channel 9. Donald also travels and appears with The Crackerjacks in their road shows. He is mainly seen at the piano but also plays the harpsichord. Honor Graduate Shortly after his acci dent and the permanent loss of sight Donald enter ed a State School for the blind. In 1957 he graduat ed as valedictorian of the North Carolina High School for the Blind at Ra leigh. He also studied pi ano for TO years and play ed the clarinet in the school orchestra for 11 years. He received a num ber of certificates for pro ficiency in music while there, and was a piano tun er during vacation. While in school, Donald was president of the Stu dent Council for two years, a Boy Scout for four years, took typing for nine years, dancing for three years ind had one year of edi jhone training After graduating from iigh school he went al nost immediately to New York City and enrolled in 1 h e Swedish Masseurs School and while in that city held a selling job for nine months. After his 'father died in 1959, Donald went to Greensboro, Burlington and Charlotte where he work ed as a masseur. All dui ing this time he kept up with his music and two years ago started recording with Arthur Smith. This led to his full time em ployment with this group. He is also active in his church and plays the pi ano at the East Church of Christ in Charlotte. Donald is married to Bel veia Maynard Ange, whom he met while in school. She is also blind. They have a son, Dana, age eight who has perfect vision. They reside in Charlotte. Donald is the son of Mrs. Ida Browning Ange and the late A. J. Ange. Sr. He also has three brothers, Eugene of the home; A. J.. Jr., of Chesapeake, and Paul of Rt. 3. Edenton. His mother and brother, Eugene, live on the Long Ridge Road about eight miles from Plymouth. Accident Ange was seriously in jured at his home by the explosion of a dynamite cap. which he had found and with whicl, he was playing. At the time of the accident, the child’s fa ther said that he. used some dynamite some time earlier and it was possi ble that a cap had been lost near the home. The boy was treated by Dr. Alban Papineau and sent to a Rocky Mount Hospital. Since that time Donald has been operated on four or five times, but doctors say even a trans plant is not -possible. From all of this young Mr. Ange has gone on to accomplish much more than the aver age person with vision.
