In the interest of revi sion of, harbor lines in Edenton’s harbor, the War Department issued notice of a public hearing. The then existing harbor lines in the Edenton harbor were established in 1906. Changes in physical fea tures adjacent to the lines since their establishment, together with a general policy of the War Depart ment for bringing all har bor lines up-to-date, creat Senator Sam Ervin Says: WASHINGTON The senior United States Sen ator, Richard Brevard Rus sell, recently announced that he is suffering from a lung tumor and will un dergo daily cobalt treat ments in an effort to treat his condition. Even though the miracle of medicine I may restore his health for years to come, this seems to be the appropriate time to call attention to the man and the service he has rendered to his coun try. Sen. Russell has long commanded the respect of his colleagues on Capitol Hill as few men ever have. A bachelor, he is quiet and modest He is an authority on the Senate, the Consti tution of the United States and our national defense. He possesses a wealth of legislative and practical knowledge dealing with the defense of this nation. He has been a leading ad vocate of farm legislation and the development of water resources. Those who know him find that he also is a scholar in the field of history. A tradi tionalist in the best usage of that term, he has been a leader in many of the battles that have- been waged in the Senate against the centralization of powers in the federal government. Earlier this year, Sen. Russell was elevated to the post of President Pro Tempore, the highest of fice the Senate can bestow on the senior members of the majority party. The honor and the post of lead ership came after a gen eration of service '|A the Senate, the institution that he venerates in his daily living. This year, too, he has been named the chairman qf the powerful Senate Appropriations Committee. Upon his assumption of the chairmanship of this com mittee, he vacated the chairmanship of the Sen ate Armed Services Com mittee which he had held ed a demand for consider ing a revision of the ex isting harbor lines «t that time. William S. Privott was appointed tax supervisor, succeeding F. W. Hobbs. The High School Band and Junior Class present ed a combination concert in the school auditorium. Over 50 members of the Albemarle Schoolmas ters Club met in Edenton, with dinner served and special music rendered by Edenton High School Band and Glee Club. Members of Town Coun cil were special guests of the Edenton Fire Depart ment at a barbecue supper in the fire station. since 1951. Under the Senate rules a member is not permitted to hold the chairmanship of two ma jor committees at the same time. More than these honors, Sen. Russell has contribut ed much to our nation by his love of country, his wise counsel, and his de votion to the Constitution at a time when many lead ers have swayed to and fro with each gust of pub lic opinion. In times of crises, he has sought to preserve those principles that have stood the test of the ages. Recently, the respected columnist, William S. White, spoke of the na tional condition that never permitted Sen. Russell to become President of the United States. White wrote perceptively about this situation: “On every single ordinary and ra tional test of performance, of competence, and of private and public honor, no politician in his time has more clearly and more repeatedly earned consid eration for the highest of fice of them all. But the trouble for Richard Brev ard Russell has not been that he ever lacked the ability to be an outstand ing President, but only that he had himself been bom in the wrong place at the wrong time and thus was forever denied even a chance at that elevation which otherwise could hardly have been refused to him.” I have often said that if I could appoint the best qualified man in the Unit ed States for the office of President, I would appoint Sen. Russell as my first choice. The tragedy of our country is that his talents were denied to the Presi dency in an ear when they were sorely needed. But none can deny that his in tegrity and judgment have made the Senate a better institution. WHY ANNUALS? Annuals are really won , derfuL They give maxi mum bloom and color to a garden in minimum time and with minimum effort. They flower in every color of the rainbow and some that the rainbow doesn’t have. The plants and the blossoms are of many shapes and sizes. No plants are easier to grow. Because of this, even the beginner can have the satisfaction of producing a colorful gar den. Annuals fit in so well— they can be used in plant ers, boros, around trees, in beds and borders—in fact any situation you can find in your garden. They are especially appreciated where you can see them dose by and enjoy then many good qualities. That’s The Ansy First Private—Why did you salute that truck driver? Second Rookie—Don’t be so dumb.
