Upon request of the Ad ministrator, the Mayor re quested Councilmen Parks and Hollowell to work with him in considering the summer recreation program and to make recommenda tions to the Council for the upcoming summer. Annuals Furnish Quickest Shade It takes years for trees to reach the size where they really furnish shade. The same applies to shrubs. But annual vines will grow so fast that before you know it you’ll have the shade you crave. The scarlet runner bean has been used for years to shade and screen back porches. In addition to scarlet flowers (there is al so a white-flowered form) it furnishes edible beans. Reach out and harvest them, Morning glories do a good job of screening. Choose the flower color you like best Heavenly Blue, white, as in Pearly Oates, or Rosie O’Grady, - rose. Close relatives of morn ing glories are moonflow ers. The vines look much the same but, as their name suggests, these blos som at night. You don’t need shade at night, but you’ll certainly enjoy the heady fragrance of these flowers. The vine called Cathed ral Bells, which you may know as Cobaea, is an other rapid grower. It grows in sun or shade, has no insect enemies, and produces large, graceful blue bell-shaped blooms all summer. Os course you can al ways plant seeds of Kudzu vine, which is sometimes suggest! ss the plant on which Jack climbed to meet the Giant. This grows fast, has large leaves to keep off sun, and clusters of laven der flowers over a long period. If it does too good a job of shading, prune off a few leaves.
