PAGE SIX-B Adult Driving Course Is Planned By College The Continuing Educa tion 'Division of College of The Albemarle will offer a drivers education program in Chowan County if suf ficient interest is shown. The driving program will be the same type 54-hour course that is presently of fered by the public school system, consisting of six hours of driving, 12 hours of observation and 36 hours of classroom work. Cer tificates will be issued to those successfully complet ing the driving and class room phase of instruction. The class will be limited to adults, 18 years of age and older, and the maxi mum number of students in the first class will be 21 students. Postal Increase Being Pushed An “inherited” postal deficit of $1.2 billion is responsible for the propos als to raise the postage bill for residents of Edenton, Postmaster James Bond has said. Bond said he had been advised by Postmaster Gen eral Winton M. Blount in Washington, D. C., that the record $1.2 billion 1970 deficit cor. celled President Nixon to seek postage rate increases. W.thout higher rates the Department will be left with a staggering deficit that would become an added public tax bur den. In addition to increasing letter main from six to seven cents, as proposed by GOOD TIPS Cover yoar window Air Conditioner with one of our reasonably priced awnings and save 25% on your electric bill. For bulk third-class mail and most magazines and newspapers, the rates would be increased 16 per cent to 20 per cent above today’s levels, he noted. These percentages include rate hikes already sched uled by previous action of Congress. The President’s recom mended increases will re duce the 1970 postal deficit by more than S6OO million.
