Duke Endowment Support Hailed
Trustees of Chowan Hos
pital, Inc., have adopted a
formal resolution of appre
ciation to The Duke En
dowment for assistance in
the current building pro
gram as well as in past
undertakings.
Jesse L. Harrell, chair
man, and C. A. Phillips,
secretary, signed the fol
lowing resolution unani
mously adopted by the
board on May 20:
“BE IT RESOLVED; that
the Board of Trustees of
Chowan Hospital, Incor
porated, for itself and in
behalf of the citizens of
the Town of Edenton, Cho
wan County and the sur
rounding area for which it
serves as a medical facility,
wish to express their grati
tude and appreciation to
the Trustees of The Duke
Endowment for the $150,-
000 appropriation to assist
in the construction and
equipment of a new, 60-

on sale this year at county

offices in North Carolina,
it was disclosed today by
H. O. Carter, state execu
tive director for the ASCS.
“This is the ‘family out
ing’ permit that a good
many people have used in
recent years, as they travel
to national forests and na
tional parks where recrea
tional facilities are pro
vided,” Carter explained.
“You pay $7 for the pass
port, and this replaces
other entrance fees, such as
the sl-a-day that you pay
at many such facilities.”
He said the entire family
can enter in a private non
cemmercia! vehicle, such as
the family car, on the
single passport. “But this
does not cover such fees

Recreational areas are
located in 46 of the 50
slates, plus the District of
Columbia. Hundreds of
parks and other facilities
are included, ranging from
the Black Hills of South
Dakota to Gettysburg Bat
tlefield in Pennsylvania.
The passport is valid
from April 1, 1969, to
March 31, 1970.

Edenton Native Given Top BPW Service Honor
On May 4, Mrs, Mary
Harvey Watson was award
ed the National Sojourner
Truth Award, given by the
Greater Bridgeport Club of
the National Association of
Negro Business and Pro
fessional Women’s Cluhs,
Inc. The award is the
highest given by the asso
ciation for outstanding
community service, and
participation in activities
advancing the status of
women.
Mrs. Watson is a social
studies teacher at Bridge
port’s first Middle School.
She is active in the local
teachers’ organization; a 1
member of the Bridgeport
League of Women Voters;
a contributing life member
of the NAACP; a member
of the Messiah' Baptist
Church and its special ,
chorus; served the Church
School as teacher and sup
erintendent. ,
Mrs. Watson has traveled i
in more than 35 states and
nine European countries.
She was educated at Eden
ton Graded School, Hert-
ford High School, Eliza
beth City State Teachers
College, Columbia Univer
sity and the University of
Bridgeport.
Mrs. Watson is a native
of Edenton and began her
teaching career in Chowan
County in September, 1936,
where she taught .seven
years; six years in Pander
County at the Pender
County Training School and
three years as supervisor
for the Negro schools for
New Bern and Craven
County; one year as an as
sistant director for a Day
Care Center in Coney Isl
and, N. Y., and in Septem
ber, 1954, she became a
teacher in the Bridgeport
Public Schools. She is
married to Ledell Watson,
also a native of
but a resident of Connec
ticut for over 35 years.
