Nelson, fish eri e s commissioner at Morehead City that the season had been extended for another five days. Even with the extension granted, unless an influx of herring developed within a few days, fishermen hereabouts were faced with their most disastrous season in many years. Wade Marr, past district governor of Rotary Inter national and later director of Rbtary International, de livered the graduation ad dress for the 1939 graduat ing class at Edenton High School, which included 42 graduates. It was announced that five small seaplane landing bases, one of them in Edenton, would be estab lished at five seaboard towns on the North Caro lina coast. Work was scheduled to begin when the projects were finally ap proved toy the Civil Aero nautics Authority, which was to build them jointly with the National Youth Administration. As a result of a jury in Recorder’s Court returning a verdict of not guilty in favor of Mrs. Lillie Mae Ward, who was charged with stealing a 69-cent pair of hose from the Rose Store, the concern and Paul Wallace, the local manager, faced suit for $30,000 damages for sland er, malicious arrest and prosecution. As the result of a peti tion circulated, 32 business houses agreed to observe a half holiday every Wed nesday afternoon from June 7 to August 30. Twine, 66, died et her home near Center Hill. 20 YEARS AGO A petition was presented to Town Council to extend the city limits to include most of the housing pro ject at Albemarle Court near Morris Circle. The new area included approxi mately 15.8 acres. Members of the Edenton Tea Party Chapter of the DAR completed repairs to the Iredell House on East Church Street and observ ed open house to which the public was invited. Miss Joyce Lorine Har rell, soprano senior at Meredith College from Edenton, was one of six public music majors to be presented in a graduation recital by the Meredith Department of Music in the college auditorium. The Chowan County Coon Hunters organized a club with 19 members and Harry Perry elected presi dent. Mrs. Harry Hand and two children, Stephanie and Bill, left for Tokyo, Japan to join their husband and father, Capt. Harry Hand, who was ordered by the U. S. Army to return to Japan for a period cf three years. William S. Privott an nounced the re-opening of offices in the Citizens Bank Building for the gen eral practice of law. Horace Eason of Shelby, state director of the Bap tist Convention’s program for Wake Forest College to raise $2,000,000 through the Baptist churches of North Carolina for the en largement of Wake Forest College at Winston-Salem, spoke at a banquet held at Hotel Joseph Hewes.
