PAGE TWO-A 9 BROAD STREET BULLETIN KATE I had a friend who laughed with me, And gave me courage, too. She left with me an example— Os the good things one should do. And so it is with each of us, As we live from day to day, Our lives might be a pattern In the things we do and say. Losing a treasured friend is one of life’s sorrowful ordeals, but knowing that all their pain is gone and that their goodness has led them to a far better place than any of us can visual* ize, give the rest of us hope and courage, too. Anyone who knew Mrs. Philip McMullan, knew her to he just the sort of a person one could be proud to have for a friend. She was, indeed, a friend to many people, truly a friend in need, time and time again. Another friend to many is Mrs. Irma Allsbrook, owner of the Nu Curl Beauty Salon, who is a pa tient in the Stuart Circle Hospital in Richmond, Va. I hear that she is doing very well and I’m sure that she is getting a much needed rest. By the way, for those of you who might want to send her a word of cheer, her room number is 518. Our Star Boarder, the little long-haired Dachs hund,-really acts like a big time star and only be cause His Honor (Buff) has him rotten spoiled. The dog will eat only cer tain kinds of dog food and it has reached the point now that he waits for Buff to spoon feed him. I have no time or patience for such “mess,” so naturally he likes Buff best. This cute little dog belongs to my oldest son who will come after him as soon as they move from a 12th floor apartment in New York to Dallas, Texas. By that time they may want to send him back here in disgust. We went to Rocky Mount Saturday to take my son Martin hack home and since he keeps a bachelor apartment, I thought I’d be doing him a favor by tak ■ng my Hazel along to help give his rooms a good house cleaning. Well, af ter a hard day’s work the mission was accomplished and satisfaction guaranteed (we thought). But after we reached home, we had occasion to call him and I asked if he was resting and enjoying his orderli ness. He said what he was doingy was putting back a little chaos in the apart ment—it was just too neat for comfort. Perhaps many of you consider the Althea (Rose of Sharon) bush just an other very prolific shrub, Keep It Beautiful If America hired people for the job, it would take the largest sort of army to keep our country free of litter. But there’s no need to hire anyone. It's a job we can do for ourselves. All of us. Every family that spreads a picnic lunch. Every boatman who cruises the lakes and waterways. Every motorist who uses our roads and highways. It is the pleasure of the U. S. Brewers Association each year to give its fullest support to the Keep America Beautiful Campaign. Remember: Every Litter Bit Hurts. This is our land. Let's treat it right. UNITED STATES BREWERS ASSOCIATION, INC. Suite 903, BB&T Bldg.. Raleigh, N. C. 27602 hut as I walk around the house each morning and see all the shades of lav ender and white blooming profusely, I’m so glad they are so numerous. It’s one shrub in particular which thrives on neglect, it seems. By the way, just be cause it’s summertime, don’t stop feeding your birds. We still feed them several times a week and are rewarded with many different visitors, one of the most recent ones being the Titmouse and the Nut hatch. However, the most beautiful songs come from our family of Cardinals and Wrens, another one of the blessings we count. Here’s a warm weather, cool gelatin salad which I came across recently. May be you’ll like it: 2 envelopes unflavored gelatin. 1/3 cup sugar. Dash salt. 2 cups milk divided. 1 cup creamed cottage cheese. Va cup salad dressing. 1 medium can crushed pineapple. Combine gelatin, sugar and salt. Stir in Vz cup cold milk and allow to soften five minutes. Heat remaining milk and add to gelatin mixture and stir until dissolved. Cool until mixture becomes thick and syrupy. Blend in cottage cheese, salad dressing and pineapple. Pour into oiled mold and chill until firm. Makes six to eight servings. A Few mate When you go shopping for groceries and come home with the trunk load ed, just take your laundry cart to the car and pile it up with groceries. No more tom bags and upset tempers. Use your left over hot dog rolls for garlic bread. Just break open length wise, spread with butter and sprinkle with garfic salt. Brown in the oven for a few minutes and they are delicious. ■Did you know that you can reuse cinnamon sticks? Just rinse and dry and wrap in plastic and use again.
