Wir.borne, who died. Edenton High School Band participated in High School Band Day exercises prior to the 105th perform ance of “The Lost Colony” at Fort Raleigh when over 500 musicians played in bands from the eastern part of the state. The Chowan Board cf Education met in special session for the purpose of opening bids on the con struction of a vocational agriculture building at Chowan High School. Edenton police broke up a wave of youthful gang thievery when two boys, 9 and 11 years old, were caught after entering the Cherry Grocery and made away with $lO in cash and helping themselves to some drinks, cigars and cigar ettes. A Bertie County Fifth Sunday Sing was held at Cashie Baptist Church in Windsor in which some Edenton people partici pated. Mayor J. H. McMullan acted as guide for a party of 10 teachers and stu dents of the State Normal School of Oswega, N. Y., who were on a tour with Fdenton as their .southern terminus. Edenton experienced the heaviest rain in recent years, as the result of which a number of sections in town were badly flood ed. The Neuse Packing Com pany began canning toma toes in the old Southern Cotton Oil Company build ing. Prof. Robert McElroy of Oxford, England, was a prominent visitor in Eden ton. He was a professor in Oxford University and was accompanied by Wade Marr cf Elizabeth City. They were shown about town by Richard Dixon and the Britisher was very much impressed with the points of interest he was shown. Twelve Chowan County home demonstration club members attended Farm and Home Week exercises at Raleigh. George E. Harrell, 58, died suddenly at the home 6f his brother -in - law, Frank Rcgerson, after be ing stricken with a stroke of apoplexy several hours earlier. He had been keep er of the County Home for 22 years. It was a happy day for members of the Chowan Home Demonstration Club, when they met for the first time in their new commun ity building at Cross Reads, Flora Mae, 6 • year -old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Brady Hare, was seriously injured when hit by a truck owned by Marcus White and driven by Mel vin Forehand. The acci dent occurred in front of the Hare home on Mexico Road when the little girl ran out on the road to get a ball. Mrs. Mamie H. Wadley, 89, widow of Rev. W. T. Wadley, who was a form er pastor of the Edenton Presbyterian Church on North Broad Street, passed ' away at the home of her ■ daughter, Mrs. Alvin Jones, in Nashville, N. C. 20 YEARS AGO Continuous rain played havoc with the Albemarle League baseball games, so that e meeting of team representatives was called in order to iron out a schedule to get caught up. Mrs. Annie Granby re ceived a letter from a Hungarian woman express ing appreciation for a box of clothing sent for distri bution among the needy. County Agent C. W. Overman reported that due to excessive rain over a two Weeks period, Chowan County’s cantaloupe crop had been damaged about 50 per cent. Chowan County Com missioners agreed to pay jurors in Chowan Superior Court $4.00 per day plus mileage instead of $2.00 per day. L. W. Herrick, Exten sion turkey specialist, vis ited 11 turkey growers in ’ Chowan County and esti i mated that the turkey crop had increased approximate ly 25 per cent above the previous year. Assistant County Agent Robert S. Marsh urged farmers to set aside July as ‘Chimney Repair Month" in order to make homes safer. Miss Mary Louise Powe cf Durham and William Henry Gardner, Jr., were united in marriage in St. Phillip’s Episcopal Church in Durham. Congressman Herbert C. Bonner informed The Her ald that he was doing everything possible to get the proposed Oregon Inlet channel project in the Riv er and Harbor Bill during the session of Congress. Francis Hicks, local auc tioneer, and his brother, Farrar Hicks of Wilson, also an auctioneer, leased Farmer’s Warehouses 1 and 2 at Windsor and operated a tobacco market.
