Around Chowan Farms V By c. w. overman Worms In Peanut Fields: I remind you peanut growers again to watch your peanut fields care fully for leaf eating by com ear worm and fall army worm. Last week I observed . several peanut fields infested with worms and a few fields being con siderably damaged by the pests. Sevin is a good in secticide to use and is safe as far as your peanut crop is concerned. Sevin should be applied at the rate of 1% actual material per acre, in other words, if you are using a 10% material, apply 10 to 15 pounds per acre and if using a 5% material, apply 20 to 30 pounds per acre. Continue leaf spot con trol applications of copper sulfur, polyram regularly every 12 to 14 days. Soybean Insects: Again I remind soybean growers to examine every field care fully for insects every 4 or 5 days and apply in secticides as needed. Corn Moisture Calcula tion: Put down 100 and subtract the actual corn moisture, divided by 100 minus 15.5 equals the per New Books At Local Library New books received at Shepard - Pruden Memorial Library include the follow ing: Fiction O’Shaughnessy’s Case by Henry W. Multiply the total weight of high mois ture com by the above per cent and you have the pounds of dry corn in the lot Divide this by 56 and you have the bushels of dry corn in the lot. Example: We have 6,000 pounds of 28% moisture com from the field. Cal culation: 100 minus 28 equals 72; 100 minus 15.5 (desired moisture) equals 84.5; 72 divided by 84.5 equals 0.825; 6,000 multi plied by 0.825 equals .4,950 pounds of dry com; 4,950 divided by 56 equals 88.4 bushels of dry corn. Bagworms on Ornament als: Last Friday "Mrs. John Doe’’ called me and inquir ed, “What kind of seed Chinese Fur Trees have that has worms in them.” Immediately I informed Mrs. Doe that the things were not seed but bag containing bagworms and informed her what to do. Bagworms attack Arbor vitaes, Cedars, sometimes Pines, and sometimes they are found on other plants. The worm leaves a cone shape bag that hangs from the leaves or branches with the tip down. Examined closely, an opening will be found in the tip of the bag through which the worm emerges at night, feeds on the foliage and then re turns to sleep during the day. Picking them off and destroying the bags is a tedious and time consum ing process. The easy and most effective way to con trol them is by spraying or dusting the plants thor oughly with a good insecti cide such as malathion or toxaphene. In the case of malathion, use two tea spoons of 57% EC liquid or two tablespoons of 25% wetable powder to a gal lon of water. A repeat ap plication may be needed in a week to 10 days. Extension circular No. 147 explains bagworm con trol and copies are avail able at our office. I am also finding crawl ing scale insects on some shrubs and also aphids or plant lice. The same mix ture of malathion should take care of these. Garden Insects: I have observed several home gar dens in which insect con trol had been neglected and insects were having a merry feast. Don’t grow a garden and let insects eat it or grass and weeds take charge. For aphids on vegetables, spraying with malathion is quite effective. Just re member that you should wait at least 7 to 14 days after applying the insecti cide before harvesting and eating the vegetables. Sev in is an excellent insecti cide for bean beetles, oth er beetles, corn ear worm and other worms. Vege tables may be harvested and eaten three days af ter applying sevin. Re gardless of what insecti cide you use, wash your vegetables before cooking. THE CHOWAN HERALD, EDENTON, NORTH CAROLINA, THURSDAY, AUGUST 28, 1989. B E CLOSED^ I SI * fl I MONDAY, SEPT.
