PAGE TWO -A BROAD STREET BULLETIN... By Kate The little yellow dandelion, To me will ever be A flower very special, She picked them just for me. Oh, how I wish I could hear her call, Grandma come here quick! I have a big surprise for you, Some flowers I have picked. Now ... the memories of that little girl Haunt me night and day, How can she pick me flowers When she’s so far away? Today I wanted to write four lines about all the school children passing by, but so it goes, when I think about children that small granddaughter’s face comes before me. And it doesn’t help me much when little Teresa Hughes comes from her grandparents next door most every day and asks “Where’s Joanne?” Now each pretty little girl passing by on her way to kindergarten or the first grade, brings to mind the fact that perhaps where she goes to school, some one is watching her, too, and remembering. We spent the Labor Day weekend at Southern Shores visiting a cousin of mine from Falls Church, Va., and Buffs grand daughter and family, who live at Southern Shores. Os course, we fished, but we did take time out to go to church Sunday morning at the Methodist Church at Kitty Hawk. It’s a beauti ful little church, with a fine pastor and a friendly congregation. And to our surprise, we saw people there, on vacation, too, from Edenton, Elizabeth City and other far away places. That “one hour” on Sunday morning had a very special meaning. It’s apple time again, too, and it seems that they are plentiful this year. We enjoy fruit of all sorts, but there’s so many different ways to use apples. This morning we had apple frit ters, other times its fried apples, apple sauce and ap ple dumplings or apple pies. Most times we have dumplings for the evening meal and that is it. They are quite easy to make, too. I just peel and core the apples, cover them with salted water until I have the pastry made. This I make from prepared bis cuit mix, with sugar add ed. Then I roll out a square of pastry, set the whole apple on a teaspoon ful of sugar on the pastry. Then I fill the center with more sugar, a dab of but ter, a sprinkle of lemon juice, a dash each of cin namon and nutmeg, wrap the pastry around it, put in a buttered baking dish, sprinkle sugar in and around the dumpling and bake slowly until the ap ple is cooked through. Things To Bo Happy About Watching all the shining faces of eager school child ren passing by. Seeing Nancy Mitchener home and working with John in the drug store. Lovely autumn weather with hot days and cool nights. Watching the cork go down while cane pole fish ing on beautiful Queen Anne’s Creek. And just being able to walk down Broad Street, stopping now and then to chat with a friend what more could one ask? A FEW HINTS When you mop the floor, spray a household air freshener on the mop. It will aid in picking up dust and leave the room pleas antly scented. Cheese can be sliced thinner with a dull knife. Several moth balls in a tool chest will absorb mois ture and keep tools from rusting. Cut roses will last much longer if you add salt to the water in the vase. For more delicious bar becued spare ribs, first soak them in orange juice for an hour. To prolong the life of cut flowers, do not allow the ends of the stems to touch the bottom of the vase. Be sure to read Kate’s Shopping Guide. CARD OF THANKS t We wish to sincerely thank our many friends who were so thoughtful and nice to us during the death of our sister, Mrs. Lillian V. Roberts. We deeply appreciate all flow ers, cards, telegrams, food sent and cars used. May God always bestow His blessings on each of you. The Wynn, Winbome and Roberts Families. THE CHOWAN HERALD.
