Byrum to discuss the possibility of planting crape myrtle trees tlong the Edenton-Windsor ighway as a memorial to World War veterans. Mrs. Byrum, who presided at the meeting, informed those present that in order to plant the trees it would be recessary, according to State Highway officials, to ASCS News By H. O. WEST Announcement Os New Elected Committeeman The delegates to the county convention met September 25 at 2 P. M. and elected Ray Byrum to a three-year term as vice chairman of the .Chowan ASC County Committee. Serving with Mr. Byrum will be A. C. Griffin as chairman, who has two years remaining in his term and E. E. Boyce, Jr., as regular member, who has one year remaining in his term. Leonard Hare and E. M. A jury in .Chowan Su perior Court returned a verdict of not guilty in the case of C. A. Cooke, a prison guard who shot John Johnson by mistake while searching for es caped convicts. J. A. Chappell, age 47, died at his home near Gli den after an illness of sev eral months. John J. Ross of Rober sonville, recently employed by Campen’s Jewelers, was a licensed amateur radio operator and set up his ap paratus at the home of J. G. Campen, where he lived. Miss Rebecca Swindell of Fairfield was appointed supervising nurse for the health district. George I. Dail was sworn in by Mayor Leroy Haskett as Edenton’s chief of police. The third annual 4-H Club poultry show and sale was held in the Eden ton armory when ten 4-H Club members represent ing every section of the county participated in the event. Mrs. J. Edwin Bufflap, 57, passed away at her home on East Church Street after an illness of four months during which time she was a patient in Chowan Hospital and Nor folk General Hospital. Coach George Thor pson was facing no little diffi culty in rounding out the Aces’ football team d e to losing the majority of the previous season’s first string players and some candidates failing to re port regularly for practice. M. A. Hughes, chairman of the Merchants Commit tee of the .Chamber of Commerce and Merchants Association, stated that most of Edenton’s stores would participate in the observance of Dollar Days. Edenton’s Colonials, un der the management of Gashouse Parker, won the Albemarle League pennant for the fourth consecutive year. A male quartet from the choir of the South Street Baptist Church of Ports mouth, Va., sang at the Rocky Hock Baptist Church revival services. Members of the Edenton Colonials were entertained by the Edenton Rotary Club. According to Dr. B. B. McGuire, health officer for the Pasquotank -Camden- Perquimans-Chowan Health District, X - ray pictures were then being made at the Elizabeth .City Health Center free of charge. Mrs. Edna W. Reaves was elected chairman of home economics teachers of ■Chowan, Perquimans, Pas quotank, Gates and Curri tuck counties.
