The cri ticism grew out of a ver dict of not guilty in favor of C. A. Cooke, Woodville prison camp guard, who was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill. Mrs. B. W. C injured in an automobile wreck at Fayetteville while accompanying Mr. and Mrs. Ted Ford to Atlanta, Ga. Eden ton High School Band presented a concert in front of the Court House at Hertford. At a meeting of the exe cutive committee of the Ocean Highway Associa tion it was unanimously advocated that U. S. 17 highway continue to pass through Edenton instead, as had been intimated, to cross the Albemarle Sound bridge and into Plymouth. That the WPA bookmo bile was proving very popular was reflected in the fact that about 1,000 books were circulated throughout the county. Alford L. Layton, 43, was found dead along the Roanoke River near Wel don. The body was found by three Negro women re turning from a fishing trip, when it was seen buried to the knees in a muddy ravine. The Red Men defeated the Masons - Rotarians to win the city softball cham pionship in a five-game series. Edenton High School’s football team, under Coach David Holton, defeated Co lumbia High School in the first football game played on the new athletic field. Mrs. W. D. Mary Elizabeth Upchurch to Elliott Belch was solem nized in the Presbyterian Church at Mount Gilead. J. G. Perry, Chowan County game warden, re ceived 30 wild turkeys for distribution in Chowan County. County representatives met at the office of Farm Agent J. B. Small to for mulate plans for the sec ond annual Negro fair in Chowan County. At a special meeting of Town Council plans and specifications for the new Norfolk Southern Bus Cor poration’s bus station be tween the Mills and Nejam buildings were approved. Representative Lindsay Warren notified Postmas ter C. E. Kramer that there would be no rural route consolidation out of Edenton, an announcement of which was opposed by practically every rural mail patron. Postmaster C. E. Kramer was notified that provision had been made in the next itinerary schedule for a philatelic truck to visit Edenton for the benefit of local stamp collectors. Dr. W. I. Hart, treasurer of the Edenton - Chowan County Chamber of Com merce, reported that a membership campaign had netted 61 member and $545 collected. Mrs. William C- Waff, 71, died at her home on Court Street after being in bad ; health for several years. Sheriff J. A. Bunch re ceived two beautiful flags to be used while Superior Court was in session. Fire Chief R. K. Hall was ill at his home when bronchial pneumonia de veloped. Radio station WCNC went on the air in Eliza beth City as the first ra dio station in the Albe marle area. Plans were made to pub lish “The Spotlight” at Edenton High School semi weekly instead of once a month. 20 YEARS AGO A new home demonstra tion club was organized in the Oak Grove community at the home of Mrs. Elbert Peele. Mrs. Sam Nixon was elected president. The Electric and Water Department installed traffic lights at the intersection of Broad and Queen Streets and at Broad and Church Streets; Six book stations were set up in Chowan County with Miss Harriet Leary, circulating librarian, mak ing her rounds at Advance, Beech Fork, Gum Pond, Oak Grove, Cross Roads and Ryland. William H. .Coffield, Jr., Post No. 9280, Veterans of Foreign Wars, observed open house at the post’s new home over the bus station. Dr. George Byba moved his chiropractic equipment from Wilson to be associ ated with Dr. George T. Crawford in offices at Ho tel Joseph Hewes. Edenton Junior Woman’s Club joined with junior woman’s clubs throughout North Carolina to conduct a membership drive for the Children’s Home Soci ety at Greensboro. J. H. Conger, J. Clarence Leary, Marvin Wilson, J. W. Davis and David Hol ton composed a delegation which went to Washington, D. C., to confer with Sen ator Frank Graham con cerning an order which called for the elimination of civilian employees at the Edenton Marine Corps Air Station. Mrs. Mary B. Spry, 72, i widow of Captain V. W. Spry, died at the home of her son, Roy L. Spry, as the result of a heart at tack. Miss Frances Belle Tuns tall and William Herbert Hollowell, Jr., were united in marriage in a ceremony held in Main Street Metho dist Church in South Bos ton, Va. Twenty-eight men, wo-- men and children were baptized by Rev. E. G. Willis at Emporer in the Chowan River. A new recreation was of fered Chowan County peo ple when the Colonial Golf Driving Range was opened to the public across from the Colonial Motor Court in North Edenton The new Belk-Tyler store observed its formal open ing. The store replaced the old frame Penelope Barker Hotel on Broad Street and added consider ably to the business sec tion of Edenton. Chowan County Farm Lieut. Fleming Completes Course Lt. Vann F. Fleming, son of Mrs. Elmira Fleming, has completed the Intelli gence Officers’ Research Course at the United States Army Intelligence School at Fort Holabird, Md. The course covered a 15-week period and is designed .to teach the officer the many phases of the investigative functions of military in telligence. Lt. Fleming graduated from D. F. Walker High School in May, 1963. He attended the Norfolk Divi sion of Virginia State Col lege in Norfolk, Va., where he graduated with a Bach elor of Science degree in business administration in May, 1968, Lt. Fleming has been a member of the U. S. Army since November 4, 1968.
