Senator Will Keynote Annual Cancer Seminar RALEIGH —U. S. Sen. Jennings Randolph (D-W. Va.) will be the featured guest speaker at the an nual meeting of members of Carolina Divi sion, American Cancer So ciety, October 25, at the Sir Walter Hotel Sen. Randolph is known to his, colleagues in the Senate as the “Humani tarian Senator.” His em phasis is on the people who will be affected by legis lation. “Will it add to human dignity?” he wants . to know. If it will, that is the way he will vote. His background as an editor, writer, professor of public speaking and journ alism, dean of the College of Business and Financial Administration at South eastern University and teacher of Leadership Training Institute adds to his wealth of experience as the Senator from West Vir ginia since November, 1958. His topic that even ing wiU be “The Rebirth of Responsibility.” The two-day meeting of the American Cancer So ciety will begin at 2 P. M. on October 25 and will in clude a special service seminar for volunteers from 3:30 to 5 P. M. Gov. and Mrs. Bob Scott will greet everyone at the annual meeting president’s reception at 6:30 P. M. with President Clifton Blue, Sen. Randolph and other volunteers. Gov. Scott will also introduce the speaker later that evening. The Sunday, October 26, meeting will begin with a morning worship service at 8 A. M. Following the breakfast, Joe Hanneford, world famous clown, will challenge the intellect of all with his antidotes of circus life. His impact on the cured cancer patients and volunteer crusaders will have a very personal and special meaning. There will be an open board of directors meeting at 9:30 A. M., and the , guest speaker will be Paul ; J. Leonard, president of i Lenco, Inc. A member of ; Who's Who in Midwest for ! Commerce and Industry, he i combines his vast business ' knowledge with the warm and human topic of “The Personal Value of Volun teers in our American Way of Life." Questions And | Answers On S. S. Q. How long do you have to be disabled to quality for disability bene fits? One friend told me one year and another said seven months. Which is correct? A. You must have a dis ability which is expected to last for at least one year. But you begin to get checks with the seventh month of your disability. Q. I applied for social security several years ago when I was age 65, but have not received any checks as I am still em ployed and paying the maximum social security tax each year. Will this increase my benefit amount when I am ready to retire, and how do I apply for the increased amount? A. Your benefit will 'be automatically refigured in the late fall of each year to include all earnings up to January 1 of that year. Since the maximum tax able earnings under social security was increased from $4,800 a year to $6,600 a year effective January 1, 1966, and to $7,800 per year effective January 1, 1968, you will be due an increase when these addi tional earnings are refig ured in your account.
