THE CHOWAN HERALD. eDLMTON, OCTOBER 23, 1963. BROAD STREET BULLETIN... By Kate Are you concerned about your neighbor? Do you let her know you care? About how she keeps her figure Or if she dyes her hair? Does she wear a wig or dentures; Do you often wonder where She spends her time and money. Does she know you really care? If you answer “yes” to all these questions You’re probably unaware That your neighbor couldn’t care less If you Do or Do Not Care. The past week has been a busy one, with the mo bile X-ray unit being here and me trying to work at it, then there was the very successful fish fry by the local Eastern Stars, not to mention everyday things and fishing besides yep, we’ve been real busy. But to be happy and busy is good for one’s soul, even though I know that it’s al most too good to be true. Thanks to so many of you who are sending me recipes, household hints and best of all friendly letters of encouragement, which I need and treasure. I am definitely not a writer and no one knows it better than I do, but I enjoy it and your letters help so much. Many times, as I walk through the stores, shop ping, I notice here and there odd things sitting on shelves, such as perishable foods set on out of the way shelves, perhaps with the beans, paper towels, etc. Shoppers will select them, then decide they do not want them and set them down anywhere and conse quently they’re unnoticed for a while and left to spoil. One store manager pointed out to me this week when he discovered a part of a coca cola on a shelf where Halloween dec orations were displayed that not too long ago a careless shopper left a soft drink in a cup on a shelf where ladies’ clips had been stocked and the drink had been spilled and ruin ed about a half dozen slips. Many of us are very care less about such things, not really meaning to be de structive, so let us each be i li'.’le more careful. A reminder: the women of the Edenton Methodist Church are having a chick en salad luncheon Thurs day, October 23, and will be glad to deliver as many plates as ordered. It’s called Plum Nut Cake: 2 cups self-rising flour. 2 cups sugar. 1 cup Wesson oil. 3 eggs. 1 cup nuts or raisins. 1 tbsp. mixed spices. 1 jar of Junior baby food plums. Beat eggs well, add sug ar, Wesson oil and flour mixed with spices. Then add remaining ingredients and bake in a tube pan for i 45 minutes at 350 degrees Thanks, Mrs. Wilson. Another friend, name un known, sent me this week a recipe for Pumpkin Squares and I’ll give you that next week. Also she sent me some hints to use, such as: Drop small slivers cf soap into a foot of ny lon hose, cut off excess leg section and knot at one end. Use for washing lin geries. You can also fill a nylon foot section with moth balls, tie the stocking tc the top of a wire clothes hanger and hang in gar ment bag to prevent moths. More next week. My apologies to Mrs. Vivian Mooney of Raleigh, who came by especially to bring me a favorite recipe and woe is me—l’ve lost it somewhere. Please, Mrs. Mooney, send it to me again.
