we have ever had in North
Carolina. Last week’s
column mentioned new
soybean varieties (Dare
and York), the develop
ment of NC-17, a new pea
nut that is expected to re
place NC-2 and Jewel, a
new sweet potato that will
be available to commercial
growers in 1970 or 1971.
Blueboy wheat is a recent
ly released, high yielding
variety that is having a
dramatic effect on wheat
yields, not only in North
Carolina but throughout
the Eastern United States.
Blueboy is the first variety
of wheat to have given an
official on farm yield of
over 100 bushels per acre
east of the Continental Di
vide. If one assumes only
a 10 bushel per acre in
crease on the 196,000 acres
of wheat which were har
vested in 1969, and a price
of $1.25 per bushel, North
