The Herald Kitchen By MILDRED HUSKINS The time between Thanksgiving and Christ mas gets shorter every year. When we were kids the month was years long and it seemed that Christmas would never come. The preparations at our house never really started until after Thanksgiving which we spent at our grand mother’s home while our Daddy went hunting. Well, not much preparation. The fruit cakes had already ‘been made. The first one was cut for Sunday dinner right after Thanksgiving. Edee Street »-«•«“» brandy. We have to plead guilty to rushing the season. We’ve begun collecting recipes for Christmas cookies but haven’t tested them yet. We’ll pass them along to you from time to time and hope you not only fill the family cookie jar, but make a batch or two to package for a friend. Both family and friends alike will delight in this miniature sleigh heaping with Peppermint Choco late and Cheesecake Cook ies. We added a few candy canes and, of course, glasses of creamy rich eggnog. By the way, for an added twist to the dairy eggnog, mix in a little cof i fee powder for a super sipper. Peppermint Chocolate Cookie 2 cups flour. Vi cup cocoa. Vt cup sugar. 1 teaspoon salt. % teaspoon baking pow der. 1% sticks butter. 2 egg yolks, slightly beaten. 1 teaspoon vanilla. 1/3 cup milk. Into a bowl sift together flour, cocoa, sugar, salt and baking powder. Cut in butter until mixture re sembles commeal. Com bine egg yolks, milk and vanilla and add to flour mixture. Stir only enough to form a soft dough. Shape cookie dough into balls , one inch in diameter and place on baking sheet; flatten with bottom of glass dipped in granulated sugar. To make meringue: beat two egg whites until frothy. Add one - fourth teaspoon cream of tartar and beat until soft peaks form. Add .one-fourth cup sugar, one tablespoon at a time, and continue beating until very stiff peaks form. Add one-half teaspoon va nilla and one-fourth tea spoon salt.
