Last year there were three winners who made applica tion through the Edenton store. They were Rosemary Holmes of John A. Holmes High School, Jane Evans of Perquimans High School and Matthew Garrett of Chowan High School. Alton Elmore, manager of Belk Tyler in Edenton, ex plained, in making the an nouncement today, that those entering college for the first time in the fall of 1970 will be eligible to compete for the scholarships. He emphasized that because the Belk group of department stores operates under an unusual plan of lo cal control, they take a spe cial interest in the citizens and the areas surrounding each store. Each store feels a responsibility to contribute towards the betterment of its own community, since it is a vital part of the business life in which it participates. The Belk Foundation, es tablished as a memorial to W. H. Belk and Dr. John M. Belk, founders of the Belk mercantile organization, has assisted many churches, col leges, hospitals and other in stitutions. Since the schol arship program was initiated in 1958, college scholarships have been awarded as an ad ditional means of providing better opportunities for de serving jroung citizens. The scholarships are avail able to high school gradu-i ates in the 18-state area serv-! id by the Belk, Leggett and Efird department stores. All versons who were graduated from high schools since Janu-j ary 1, 1964, may apply—pro vided they ranked scholastic- 1 ally in the upper one-half of their graduating class and will be entering college as freshmen during 1970. The Foqndation ..hopes through this program to en courage the study of retail ing, marketing and related business-type subjects. Scholarship winners will be selected by a special scholar ship committee appointed by the Belk Foundation. Win ners will be named on the basis of scholastic rating, school and community activi ties, financial need, character and interests and potentiali ties for success in college and adult life. Those receiving scholarships will be free to select their own college and preferred course of study. Local high school seniors who are interested in apply ing for one of the Belk Foundation scholarships may contact Mr. Elmore at Belk Tyler in Edenton for com plete information and an of ficial application form.
