According to plans, a cere
mony of much interest not
only locally but nationwide,
was scheduled to be held
February 1. At that time it
was arranged to have appro
priate ceremonies for placing
a wreath on the grave of As
sociate Justice James Iredell’s
grave in the Johnston Burial
Ground at Hayes. Adding to
th« interest of thu occasion
was to be the presence of
three of Justice Iredell's de
scendants.
Kermit Layton tendered his
resignation as scoutmaster of
the Edenton Boy Scout troop.
He served as scoutmaster for
two years and the troop com
mittee was right much con
cerned in finding a successor.
Mrs. J. W. Davis was ap
pointed chairman of the Cho
wan County Finnish Relief
Fund by Governor J. C. B.
Ehringhaus.
Edenton awoke to find it
self in the grip es a small
sized blizzard and as a result
residents in some measure re
alized the experience of dig
ging out of a snow. About
six inches of snow had fallen
v'ith drifts as much as two
feet deep at some places.
It was announced that the
old Suffolk and Carolina
Railroad, for many years a
part of the Norfolk Southern
system running between Suf
folk, Va., and Edenton, was
soon to be abandoned. The
SAC was built about 1890
and for many years did a
flourishing business. Through
passenger trains operated be
tween Edenton and Norfolk
through Suffolk.

Funeral services were held
for William R. Chappell, 79,
who died at his home near
Cross Roads after being in ill
health for a year or more.

A mental whirring of
wheels and a flurry of chal
lenging ideas epitomised the
meeting of the board of di
rectors of the Albemarle
Arts Council, Inc., this week.
Our area cultural communi
cations center located in
Edenton is now transmitting
good news and “go” signals
to its 4,000 associate members
equal to a NASA mini-center,
in the Albemarle at a rate
Cultural opportunities for
children rates tops on the
Area Arts Council’s list of
priorities and cultural oppor
tunities there shall be!
In March the Theater-in-
Education, Inc., of New York
will tour schools in five
county school systems in the
Albemarle. Seven perform
ances, designed for student
audiences, of Shakespeare’s
“Love’s Labor’s Lost” will be
given during school hours.
In April an Area Arts
Council Creative Writing
Contest will be held for all
senior high school students
wishing to speak out in essay,
short-short story or poem
form on “The Contemporary
Scene.”
East Carolina University is
processing a spring exhibit of
“Children's Art for Young
Viewers." This exhibit is
being especially designed for
touring counties belonging to
Albemarle Area Arts Council.
At one time such programs
for the Albemarle sounded
like science fiction fantasies.
Today, due to the interest,
concern and cooperation of
parents, educators, town
councils and county commis
sioners, a relatively small
team of county representa
tives have transformed fan
tasies into facts.
Next year, if we in the Al
bemarle so desire, the Arts
O. C. .Ward, prominent
farmer of the Ryland section,
was seriously injured when
hit car skidded into a truck
on the icy highway.
The Missionary Society of
the Methodist Church decided
to form two circles with Mrs.
G. A. Helmet and Mrs. J. W.
Cates as leaders of one group
and Mrs. P. T. Owens and
Mrs. T. J. Wood as leaders
of the other group.

additional weeks in order to
make a more creditable show
ing in the survey to locate
tuberculosis in this Health

ready enthulsastically sanc
tioned by the State Arts
Council: a traveling film fes
tival for children and adults,
a pilot project In creative ac
tivities for elementary child
ren, and art Albemarle series
of traveling exhibits and per
formances featuring talent in
our area.
The Arts Council is also
talent scouting for amateur
and profeasional photograph
ers to represent the Albe
marle in two important pho
tographic competitions and
exhibitions.
"North Carolina for North
Carolinians,” a photographic
competition sponsored by the
North Carolina Arts Council,
will be the source for a trav
eling exhibition which will
tour Tarheelia next fall.
“Marine Photography, In
ternational,” a similar com
petition, is being sponsored
by the Mariners Museum in
Newport News and will fea
ture photographic potpourri of
global maritime experiences.
