|Aces Down Northampton!
•: Last Thursday afternoon at
;j, Northampton High School
’the Edenton Aces gained their
:* second victory over North
:j ampton 32 to 27 and ran
> their record to 5-0 for the
:• season. Spotting Northamp
> ton 10 points because of for
feits in the 98 and 185 pound
[\ division, the Aces came back
;i to score six pins and a draw
:• compared to three pins and a
draw for Northampton.
Don Morring, 107 pound
:■ class, remained undefeated as
he pinned his opponent in 19
: seconds of the first period
: for a school record for the
: fastest pin. He has pinned
: all previous opponents.
. Sam Lewis remained unde
■ Seated as he battled to a
: draw in the 115 pound class.
Howard Rascoe, 130 pound
: class, won his fifth victory,
: all by pins, to lead the teem
■ In the largest number of

A new kind of duck shoot
-:«r is developing. He’s fast
,ip. fast-out. He’s mobile. He
■'dollows the birds. He may
|:gun one area today for one
kind of bird, and another
;:area miles away next week
•; tor a different species.
You are forced into this
■: kind of shooting technique if
• you want to follow water
; fowl at all. Special seasons
• are one reason for it. All
: over the country game man
: agers are opening seasons at
[.Specific times for specific
: Jipecies. If you’re smart, you
; pike advantage of them. But
• li doesn’t make sense to go
:t? elaborate lengths for a
: ikeek-long early teal season,
• fpi example, when you may
: jie able to get off for only
: or two cracks at them.
sft does make sense if all you
:fcave to do to go after them

Edward Bazemore pinned
his opponent to remain in
the undefeated ranks, while j'
John Raines, in the 145 '
pound class, scored his first I
pin of the season. j
Mike Lamb remained un
defeated as he pinned his op- i
ponent in the second period.
Going into the last match, 1
the score was tied 27-27, but 1
Alvin Blount, the 255 pound
unlimited Ace, pinned his |
man to give the Aces the
victory.
This afternoon the Aces
meet Plymouth at Plymouth
for what could be a deciding J
meet for the Albemarle Con-1
ference championship. Both
Edenton and Plymouth are
undefeated in conference,
meets and the outcome of
this meet should give a good
preview of the conference
tournament to be held at
Ahoskie March 12 and 13.
Another factor that de- j
mands a new approach to wa- j
terfowling is cost. Duck
shooting happens to take!
place on waterfront prop- j
erty, and it costs plenty to ]
buy anywhere or even lease I
a season. It’s one more rea- •
son why the here - today,
there-tomorrow gunner is
emerging. Anywhere there
isn’t a posted sign is his oys
ter. Only on the Pacific Fly
way, fed as it is by Alaska’s
vastness, does traditional
duck shooting seem likely to
hold out for very long.
People are dropping out of
waterfowling because the
c-ne-species, one-place concept
has been so basic to the sport
for so long. You gunned
from one place where you
put out one kind of decoy. |
You may have killed a vari- j
ety of ducks but you were
essentially after one specific
kind. When the bag limit on;
that kind is reduced, gunners
all over the country toss in j
the sponge. Yet the fault is!
with the gunners, not Ducks
Unlimited. For while cer
tain type of waterfowl are
declining, other populations
are tt all-time highs. Here
are some highlights:
Geese: Canada geese are
quite literally in a nation
wide population explosion.
Not only do waterfowl biolo
gists view the future of this
species as more promising
than any other, almost every
state has grown its own
flocks. These are resident
and often nonmigratory.
Teal: On both the Atlantic
and Mississippi flyways spe
cial teal seasons of one kind
or another can be expected
ias teal populations build up.
Scaups: The Atlantic Fly
away scaup shooter gets extra
'days and a bonus of increas
|ed limits. In the Midwest,
: substantial populations go un
harvested because most gun
ners are mallard-happy.
| Swans: Did you know an
■ open season on swans has
been in effect in Utah for
I several years? The build-up
lof these birds on the Atlantic
FJyway is such that fur the
last several years there has
been talk of harvesting them.
Only fear of the wrath of
nature lovers is preventing it
Branti Black brant con
tinue to stand up under
heavy shooting pressure on
both coasts. Limits are six a
day, they are easy to decoy
and kill, and in many places
remain good to sent into
