the land. She attributed part
of this to “our having lost
sight of the fact that al
though we live in a changing
world, we must live by and
with those fundamental
values which do not and must
not change.”
"Those who practice and
teach civil disobedience,”
Judge Morris asserted, "will
eventually destroy our coun
try if they are followed.”
“We cannot tolerate civil
disobedience as it is practiced
today,” she continued, “be
cause it and violation of our
criminal laws are one and
the same things in the minds
of those who practice it. A
government under law rather
than under man will not con
tinue to endure when there
exists extensive and wide
spread disrespect for its
laws.”
She urged that citizens
show a genuine respect for
law, an appreciation for those
who obey it and public con
tempt for those who don’t.
This respect must be
taught, the speaker said, "...
to our children, in our
schools, in our colleges and
in our homes. We must de
mand such respect and obe
dience of others.”
“Those of us who love the
freedom of democracy do not
care to have our lives regu
lated by some dictator,” she
said, adding "if we do not
want dictators, we must im
pose upon ourselves discip
line to bring order out of so
cial chaos.”
Mrs. Beulah Boswell, presi
dent, was mistress of cere
monies for the banquet.
Guests and past Woman of
the Year recipients were in
troduced by Mrs. Edna Snell.
Others participating in the
program were Mrs. Lena M.
Leary, Rev. George B.
Holmes and Ernest P. Ke
hayes.
A program of special mu
sic was rendered by Peggy
Bunch, Peggy Byrum and
Donna Bunch.

TWO BREATHALYZER OPERATORS CERTIFIED I —The course just completed by State
Trooper Charlie Thomas, left, and G. W. Micelle of Edenton Police Department which
certified them as breathalyser operators, isn’t nearly as humorous as it would appear in
this picture. Neither are the results recorded from tests on most drivers who have been
drinking. The operators here demonstrate the device to Mrs. Betsy King, an employee
in the Municipal Building. The local officers took the 68-hour course at Roanoke-Cho
wan Technical Institute in Ahoskie.
