PAGE TWO I—B £t f One of the most serious to the economy of a large part of the First Dis trict is the consideration that is being given by the De partment of Defense to cur tailing and possibly closing, the Cherry. This oper ation has an average annual payroll of some S2B million in addition, $5 million is spent each year in goods and sup —plies in the surrounding area, y.and it also employs in excess •Os 3,000 people. It has been stated that it is the largest single employment under one roof in North Carolina. The average annual salary is in excess of $9,000. With this .•tudy being made by the present administration, it be c-came necessary last week to vllo everything possible to «l*top or forestall any drastic auction affecting this facility. ot So, on Wednesday, Febru ary 25, along with Governor ’Bob Scott, Senators Sam Ervin and Everett Jordan, •’Congressmen Henderson and -ilonas, Craven County Com 'Vnission Chairman Living stone Stallings, and his coun mierpart in Carteret County, Bennett, we met for Sver an hour with Secretary f the Navy, John Chafee, figures which we hope will cause a reconsid eration of any action which ']has been tentatively plan- Ched. Last week President Pom pidou of France addressed a joint session of' Congress. Due to the strained feelings on the part of some of the members toward the French nation, Congressional attend ance was somewhat light and applause was less than en thusiastic. Within the last few days the National Governors’ Con ference convened here in Washington. One of the basic problems of today is the exo dus of rural people to the urban centers and the plight of the small towns in trying to provide housing and utili ties to maintain and attract their residents. In an effort to come up with answers and provide some relief, an ad hoc committee composed of nine Governors from the va rious states and 18 members of Congress, was created. North Carolina Governor Bob Scott is on the committee, and I had the honor of be ing chosen by the chairman of the Agriculture Commit tee, Bob Poage, to serve as one of the Congressional members. On Thursday last, we met jointly and made plans to try to seek a better understanding of the prob lems of rural and small town citizens. If answers are to be obtained, then it must take THE CHOWAN HERALD, EDENTON, NORTH CAROLINA, THURSDAY, MARCH 5, UTB. the joint efforts of both the state and federal government. In this connection, a recent Farmers Home Administra tion report revealed that 94.2 per cent of the loan re cipients in 1969 were non farm families. This is no cri ticism of this statistics, for most of the loans went to residents of small towns and cities as well as the small municipalities them selves. These percentage fig ures might be due in part to the exodus of farmers and farm labor from the small towns to the urban centers. This trend must be reversed if we are to maintain a bal anced society and economy. Former Edenton Couple To Travel Mr. and Mrs. Ernest L.
