At the meeting Collins told Sun-drop bottlers of the southeast that the acquisition of Sun-drop by his company “adds more than 1M Sun-drop bottlers to the ranks of nearly 900 fran chised Crush and Hires root beer bottlers in the U. S., Canada and some 50 countries overseas.” Col. Thigpen Is Given Military Medal For the second year in a row, a 325th bomb squadron crew commanded by Lt. Col. John H. Thigpen, formerly of Edenton, won a top Fif teenth Air Force flying award. One year ago, on February 7, 1969, Col. Thigpen’s B-52 crew was presented with the Col. Pat Flemming outstand ing bombardment crew tro phy. Word was received on February 3 that the crew had done it again. This trophy is symbolic of the most outstanding bomber crew performance during a Strategic Air Command di rected operational readiness inspection. Marriages In Chowan Are More Lasting (Special to The Herald) NEW YORK—How high is the divorce rate in Chowan County compared with the rate in other communities? How many local residents have been divorced? How many have remarried? For the great majority of men and women in the local area, marriage is a once-in-a lifetime undertaking. For others, who start out with equally high hopes, their marriages end up on the rocks. Data recently obtained from the Department of Commerce, from the Population Refer , ence Bureau and others in dicate the current trends in divorce. In Chowan County, it ap pears, there are fewer di vorced people, in proportion to population, than are found in most parts of the United Chowan Soldier Now In Vietnam WITH U. S. COMBAT AIR FORCES, Vietnam—U.S. Air Force Airman First Class Philip L. Smithson, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. M. Smith son of Tyner, N. C., is on -duty at Tan Son Nhut AB, Vietnam. Airman Smithson, a com munications specialist, is with a unit of the Air Force Com munications Service which provides global communica tions and air traffic control for the USAF. He previously served at Robins AFB, Ga. The airman is a 1967 gradu ate of Chowan High School. It takes a lot of patience to improve the human race and it also takes a lot of time. States. According to the latest es timates, some 41 out of every 1,000 local residents over the age of 14 are either divorced or separated from their spouses. That is exclusive of the number who were di vorced previously but have remarried. The rate compares favor ably with the rate in other areas of the United States, where it averages 47 per 1,000. In the state of North Carolina, it is 44 per 1,000. Special interest centers on the divorce situation at this time because of the actions taken in many states in the last few years extending the grounds for divorce. In New York state, where adultery was the basic ground for divorce for many years, five new grounds have been added, including separa tion for two years or more. If a couple can show that they have been living apart for that length of time under an agreement, they can get a divorce for that reason alone. Based upo n ■ the latest sampling survey of the coun try, the number of divorced and separated persons in Chowan County is now esti mated at approximately 320. .This compares with the 1960 total of 280.
