THOMPSON County Extension Chairman Suggestions For a Good Garden: Plan your garden. Arrange plantings or seedings so that tall growing crops (such as sweet com) do not shade low growing crops such as beans. Allow room for consecutive plantings. Be ready to follow early matur ing crops with later seeded or planted crops. Put crops like strawberries—which grow more than one year—on one side for easier care and more sunlight. Purchase good seed. Your garden can be no better than the seeds you purchase. Buy seeds from a reliable seeds man. Have soil tested. You can have your soil tested “free” to find out if you need lime and fertilizer. If you do not have your 9oil tested, apply 100 pounds of 5-10-10 fertil izer and 100 pounds of lime for “each one-tenth acre.” Prepare garden soil prop erly. A good garden soil should be well drained, free of weeds, grasses, clods, fer tile, properly limed and fer tilized and easily worked. If the soil is not in proper tilth, it is hard to get a good stand. Have insecticides ready. If you have a garden, you will have worms; so be prepared and have your dust or spray on hand to prevent a build-up of insects on your garden vegetables. Sevin is a good garden insecticide. Keep garden clean and free of weeds and grasses. The most certain way to lose a garden is to neglect it. Cul tivate and hoe often. Watch for diseases and ne matodes. Call your Extension office if you have diseases or suspect nematode injury. They can be very destructive in your garden. Harvest on time. Do not allow crops to become over mature. Do not harvest too early. Learn the number of days required for most of your crops—so that you can estimate maturity dates. Remember. The reasons you have a garden are to fur nish additional food; to fur nish you top quality food; to furnish you a reliable, steady supply of food; to improve your health through a diver sified diet and to save you money.
