Tax Is Topic
For Meetings
Citizens who would like to
suggest changes in the way
property taxes are levied
across the state will be giv
en the chance in a series ol
public hearings.
Rep. David W. Bumgard
ner, Jr.., of Gaston County,
chairman of the Ad Valorem
Tax Study Commission, said
February 24 that hearings
would be held in those areas
where there is the most citi
zen interest.
Rep. Bumgardner caution
ed, however, that persons ob
jecting to the tax assessment
ratios or tax rates in their
counties should not ask to
come before the commission
since these matters are under
the jurisdiction of boards of
county commissioners.
Persons desiring to appear
before the commission should
send a letter, including their
general topic of discussion, to
the Commission for the Study
of the Local and Ad Valorem
Tax Structure, 671 Revenue
Building, Raleigh, N. C.
27602.
The commission was set up
by the 1969 General As

Girl Scout News
By Cheryl Hollowell, Scribe
Girl Scout Troop 757 took
a trip to Williamsburg, Va.,
February 28. We went to the
Information Center and there
we saw a film on Williams
burg. After the film, we met
our guide, Mrs. Barberntiz.
She showed us around and
we saw the Governor’s Pal
ace. There we played in a
maze. Then we went to oth
er places like the Raleigh
Bakery, the House of Bur
gesses, George Withe’s House,
the jail and others. We all
enjoyed the trip very much.

Farmers Required
To Report Income
This is the time of year
most farmers are mainly con
cerned with their fanning
plans for the coming year.
However, farmers must also
be concerned with their past
year’s farm operation in or
der to determine their earn
ings for income tax purposes.
A farmer, like any other
self-employed person, is re
quired to file an income tax
return if he clears S4OO from
his farming operation. This
is so even though he owes no
income tax. The farmer,
like any other sell-employed
person, also pays social se
curity taxes and gets social
security credits if he has net
profit from his farm opera
tion of S4OO or more.
However, a farmer, unlike
any other self-employed per
son, can use an optional
method of reporting his earn
ings on his income tax return
for social security purposes.
This optional method enables
him to get social security
credits as long as his farm
sales are S6OO or more even
though he loses money.
Without social security cre
dits, the farmer would be
neither eligible for retire
ment benefits in his later
years; disability payments if
he becomes disabled; nor
would his family qualify for
monthly benefits in the event
of his death. Any farmer
who is interested in addi
tional information is invited
to get in touch with the so
cial security office at 401
South Dyer Street, Elizabeth
City, North Carolina.
