PAGE SIX l-D THREE CROSSES By MARY CAYTON Three crosses high on a barren MU, Three crosses side by side; On either side they nailed a thief, On the center our Saviour died. The lives of three men were taken away, There flowed the blood of three men, But only the blood from the center cross Could save our souls from sin. He asked for no mercy there that day, And no mercy to Him was given; Forsaken by both God and man, Suspended between earth and heaven. I am the Good Shepherd He said one day, I lay down My life for the sheep; There on that cross He paid for my sin, My soul forever to keep. When He cried out so loud and clear, “It is finished” is what He said, And it came to pass the seed of the woman Had bruised the serpent’s head. He conquered death and the grave, He arose to die no more; He’s gone to prepare a place for us When we gather on Heaven's shore. ■ WtlJtford I funeral home m 1 EDENTON, N. C. Lesson Text: Matthew 28. As we study this lesson today, we are forcibly struck by the fact that in the resurrection of Christ, God overcame both sin and death. With in the Holy Trinity, truth and right became in violate. The Resurrection of Christ, after death, holds out to the world a reassurance that out of evil comes great good. It rises triumphantly from the ashes of man’s erratic and sometimes be wildering cruelty to his fellow men. And as the story is recounted year after year during the Easter period, it loses none of its impact It is the dawn of a sense of renewal within the breasts of Christians everywhere. Jesus had long been preparing His twelve closest companions for His death; He had de voted much time to instructing them in regard to their continuance of His ministry, the con version of sinners. The reappearance of Christ to those closest to Him, during the interim be tween His death and His ascension was a con tinuing facet of this preparation. Christ invariably urged those to whom He appeared to “be not afraid.” Fear was not one of His goals—not the kind of fear that is the common connotation of the word. Awe, how ever, He did not frown upon. For when one is awed, one is impressed. And how much more impressive can anything be that this M3n loved us so much He laid down His life for us? Had He not done so, had the cruel nails of the cross ended, once for all the life of One dedicated to the service of mankind, then we would, indeed, be in a sorry state—hopeless and lost! But such was not the case. Christ was crucified, yet He lived! And so the UfßPct of sinners is saved! During the forty days that Jesus remained on earth, before His ascension, He appeared to many of His beloved followers. This was a period of transition—and here we must make note of the fact that whereas, during His life time on earth, He worked among His little band ot close companions; after His crucifixion He—as He had promised—worked within them. If the Easter season means anything to us at all, it must make its point with us, right here. Our belief in the risen Christ means not only serving Him, but proclaiming Him to others. He must live within us, accompanying us on our often perplexing journey through a world that is both complex and confusing. He should ever be present in our hearts, our minds, our deeds. As with all the other truly great gifts of God, there is a sense of obligation which accom panies them. The Christian doctrines must be aggressively proclaimed by a band of people united in their innermost beliefs those of us who make up the Christian world.
