almost unfailingly starts to
mount, the Insurance Informa
tion Institute suggests that car
owners ponder carefully the
fact that the total economic cost
!of crashes on American high
ways in 1969 amounted to some
$16.5 billion!

The Institute points out that
even if you carry proper and
adequate automobile insurance,
there is no guarantee that the

the same.

arranged by Miss Beulah
Perry.
Miss Perry presented the
winner an engraved silver
bowl and a spray of red roses. :
Mrs. Hassell has served this
year as District Director and
in the past served on the
state nominating committee.
In making the presentation,
Miss Perry pointed out that
the award was actually not
based on a single year’s ac
tivities, but Mrs. Hassell’s

On May 2 you, as a registered Democratic voter, will exercise
one of your highest privileges as an American citizen. You will
on that day exercise your franchise to vote for the candidate of *
your choice.
As a candidate for the office of SHERIFF of CHOWAN COUNTY,
it is my hope and desire to meet and talk with every registered
voter in the County, however, in the event I do not see you > r
personally before the date of the Primary election, please let
me take this opportunity to give you a few facts regarding my
candidacy and myself: ,
AGE: I am 50 years old.
FAMILY: lam married tD Erelean Syrum and have
3 children.
EXPERIENCE: I have been in law enforcement work for
the past Hj. years; first as an A B C
officer and later as Deputy Sheriff. I
was recently appointed SHERIFF of Chowan
County by the County Commissioners to fill
the unexpired term of the later Sheriff Earl
Goodwin and am presently serving in that
capacity. During these past llj. years it
has been my privilege to attend several
schools in law enforcement at the Institute
of Government at Chapel Hill, N. C.
MILITARY EXPERIENCE: Veteran of World War II
CIVIC ACTIVITIES: Member Ruritan Club, Chowan Cross
Fire Department. Member and Commander of
the Ed Bond Post # American Legion.
RELIGION: lam a member, of Center Hill Baptist Church.
If the voters of Chowan County nominate and elect me to this
high office, I shall sincerely assume and diligently perform the
many important duties with a full sense of responsibility to the
peoples of Chowan County.

and gardens has been pro
duced for the Travel and
Promotion Division.
The booklet covers in text
and photographs the variety
of North Carolina’s flowers
and gardens. Included is a
Garden Guide which is keyed
to the index of cities and
towns on the State Highway
Map.
In preparing the booklet,
consideration was given to
gardens that could be visited,
toured or inspected easily by
Tar Heel visitors.
A total of 20 color photo
graphs illustrate the booklet
which is divided into four
sections: Wild and Free,
Coastal Gardens, Piedmont
Gardens, and Mountain Gar
dens.
The new addition to the
state’s travel booklets, en
titled “The Flowers and Gar
dens of North Carolina,” was
produced by Charles Crone
Associates of Raleigh. Copies
