m CHOWAN HERALD, EDENTON, NORTH CAEOUNA Council Changes Two Local Town Ordinances Two ordinances were chang ed April 7 by Town Council and a study of the land dill authorized. The ordinance dealing with cutting vacant lots was amended to begin mowing one month earlier—or May 15. Councilman J. D. Elliott reported that about 75 lots are being mowed by the town on a regular basis and charges made to property owners. Councilman Elliott said the town is not in the mowing business but efforts must be made to keep the vacant property in an attractive man ner. The ordinance fixes charges at $lO per hour and $lO minimum. Mayor George Alma Byrum had instructed a committee to review the ordinance in order to aid beautification efforts here. Councilman Elliott also re ported recommended changes in the cemetery ordinance. The council changed this law to require that Christmas flowers be removed by Feb ruary 1 and Easter flowers by June 1. Town Administrator W. B. Gardner reported that ap proximately 50 per cent of the land fill east of Edenton has been used. He said it is being used a great deal by rural citizens and the town Could either fence and lock the property or provide bet ter supervision. Gardner was authorized, py the town to advertise delin quent taxes. He reported that the levy of $120,300 was within $6,000 of being col lected as of March 31. Street Department Supt. J. C. Parks, Street Commissioner David White and Gardner were instructed to make an inventory of needed street and sidewalk improvements. The town plans to improve sidewalks damaged by trees on town property, etc., at no cost to the property owner. Gardner was authorized to purchase Sea-Fog mosquito control equipment for use this summer. The system is said to be more effective than what has been used in the past but does not have DDT in the compound. Mayor Byrum recommended that the council draw a reso lution of respect for W. E.
