IDr. J. H. Horton, local den

Board of Education after
serving on the interim board.
He was a member of the
Edenton City board when the
two administrative un its
merged.
A native of Edenton, Dr.
Horton graduated from local
schools, St. Augustine College
in Raleigh and received his
dental degree from Howard
University in Washington,
D. C.
He served two years jn the
U. S. Army Dental Corps and
was discharged with the rank
of captain.
He is a member cl the ves
try and treasurer of St. John's
Episcopal Church. He has
served as a member for years
on the Board of Trustees and
Executive Committee of St.
Augustine College.
Dr. Horton is an original
member of Edenton - Chowan
Good Neighbor Council which
he now serves as chairman.

a member of the Chowan
County Board of Education
when it was merged with
Edenton City Unit. He now
seeks election to Edenton-
Chowan Board of Education.
He is a graduate of Duke
University and Southern Col
lege of Optometry. He is a
past president of Edenton
Lions Club and former mas
ter of the Masonic Lodge and
chairman of the official board
of Edenton Methodist Church.
Dr. Downum served in the
U. S. Navy in World War H.
He served on the Governor’s
Task Force Study Group on
Education.
In a statement he said:

plished toward providing bet
ter educational opportunities
and facilities for our young
people. It is a continuing

judgment, experience and

O. C. LONG, JR.
O. C. (Long, Jr., was chair
man of Chowan County Board
of Education at the time it
was merged with the Edentop
City Board and has served as
vice chairman of the com
bined boards. He is seeking
re-election from the Secoqd
Township.
A native of Perquimans
County and educated in
schools there, Long moved to
Chowan County in 1943. He
has associated with
Leary Brothers Storage Com
pany since moving to the
county.
A member of Rocky Hock
Baptist Church, he is a. deac
on and has served in many
capacities. He helped organ
ize the Boy Scout Troop
there and served as scout
master for 21 years.
Long was elected to the
Chowan County board in 1961
and was elected chairman in
1965. His present term ex
pired in December.
In a statement, Long said:
“Serving Chowan County as
a member of the Edenton-
Chowan Board of Education
is a privilege for which I am
grateful. In announcing my
candidacy for re-election to
this office, I wish to thank all
the people for their special
interest and cooperation in
supporting the educational
program of our county. And
as long as I am privileged to
serve as a member of the
board of education I shall, to
the best of my ability, strive
to support and maintain the
best quality educational pro
gram for all of our children
that this county can afford.”

D. F. Walker is the retired
principal of the school in
Edenton which bears his
name. He was principal of
the school for 36 years.
A native of Alabama, he
was educated in schools there
and received degrees from
Talladega College and Hamp
ton Institute as well as New
York University.
His first teaching assign
ment was in 1929 as princi
pal of Northampton County
Training School in Gferys
burg, later moving to Eden
ton, where he was principafl
until his retirement in 1968.
He has been active in Red
Cross, Boy Scouts and other
civic activities in the area.
He has held office and been
in numerous educational and
professional organizations.
Walker said:
“After 36 years of prind
palship at the D. F. Walker
School, I am still dedicated to
the proposition that the total
development of the pupil and
the fostering of the best edu
cation is essential for the
growth and prosperity of our
county, state and nation.”

Mrs. Emily G. Ambum, 104
West Gale Street, is seeking
her first pcflitical office in a
race for the Edenton-Chowan
Board of Education.
Mrs. Ambum is a native of
Pikesville, Ky„ but moved to
Statesville in her teens. She
graduated from high school
there and later from Char
lotte Memorial Hospital
School of Nursing.
She is married to L. F.
Ambum, Jr., publisher of
The Chowan Herald, and the
mother of five children. She
is a member of Edenton
Methodist Church, the Gar
den of Eden Club and has
participated in many com
munity projects since coming
to Edenton in December, 1964.
While in Statesv;ille she was
active in the Junior Service
League and received the Club
woman of the Year award
there.
The candidate states that
she has a strong feeling about
the importance of quality
public education and would
like to serve the community
and its youth by being on the
board of education.

THOMAS P. GRIFFIN
Thomas Paul Griffin, 38-
year-old farmer, resides on
Route 3, Edenton, and is seek
ing a seat on Eden ton-Chowan
Board of Education. He is a
native of Chowan County and
graduated from local public
schools.
Griffin was in the National
Guard for 12 years and is a
former member of Edenton
Jaycees. He is engaged in
a family fanning operation.
He is a member ct Mace
donia Baptist Church; was on
the board .of N. C. Peanut
Growers Association tor four
years, N. C. Agriculture
Foundation for four years
and served as president of
Chowan Farm Bureau far
four years and is presently

Charles B. Morgan, 112 West
Queen Street, is a 38-year-old
painting contractor who is
seeking a seat on the Eden
ton-Chowan Board of Educa
tion.
He attended Edenton public
schools, graduating in 1952.
He served four years in the
U. S. Air Force.
Morgan was a member of
Edenton Jaycees for 10 years,
serving as vice president,
treasurer and a member of
the board of directors. He is
a member of Edenton Lions
Club and a member of Eden
ton Baptist Church.
He is married to the former
Ann Agnew and they have
three children.

Dr. Allen Homthal, who
opened an office in Edenton
for the general practice of
dentistry, is one of eight can
didates for four seats from
First Township on the Eden
ton-Chowan Board of Educa
tion.
Dr. Hornthal moved herd
after being discharged from
the U. S. Navy.
He is a graduate of Tar
boro public school and re
ceived his undergraduate and
graduate work from the Uni
versity of North Carcttina at
Chapel Hill.
Dr. Hornthal is a member
of Edenton Rotary Club and
a vestryman at St. Paul’s
Episcopal Church. He and
Mrs. Hornthal are sponsors of
the Young Churchmen.
He is married to the form

have one daughter. The

Avenue.
