Around Chowan County Farms ' By R M. THOMPSON County Extension Chairman I iLcoking a t m an y 0 f the com fields in Chowan Coun ty, H appears from the color that the cool weather has tied up nitrogen to where it is not available and the com is showing a yellow cast. In most cases warmer weather will correct this where the nitrogen has been applied when the corn was pegging and it becomes available to the plant There is also evidence in com of minor element defici encies. In most cases the symptoms of the com in a deficiency in manganese. Man ganese deficiency can occur in corn, soybeans and peanuts when the soil pH is from 6.1 or higher. K usually occurs on the high, well drained soil first and causes a striping of the leaves with the ribs green and in between ribs a yellow ing effect. The best way to correct this is by soil samp ling and where manganese is kw, applying it in the fer tilizer. But for those fields where it comes on after the plants arc up and there is a manganese deficiency appear ing, it can be corrected (for that growing year by spray ing manganese directly on the foliage. Increase in yields have been considerable in soybeans particularly where this deficiency has appeared by correcting it with foliage application. B p HUGE B § DIXIE DOLLAR STORE 1 S.
