Around The Farms In Chowan County
By R. ML THOMPSON
County Extension Chairman
At this time of year ithere
are always many questions in
regards to the use of at
cracking and post-emergence
herbicide treatments on pea
nuts. This year our growers
are attempting to reduce both
production and labor inputs.
Past experience and experi
ments have shown that a few
dollars spent now in buying
cracking stage herbicides can
Stive some mighty big chop
ping hills later on in the sea
son.
'•St is pretty well accepted
now that no single or com
bination herbicide at any one
time can provide season long
weed control. The problem is
to select the proper combina
tion of preplant incorporated,
pre - emergence, cracking
stage, and post-emergence her
bicides to provide adequate
control at the lowest cost
Some on-farm tests conduct
ed in 1968 gives us some
clues as to the value of at
tacking stage treatments.
Where broadleaf weeds were
the major problem, the use of
Dyanap at 1% gal. A, Enide-
Dinitro at 1 gal. A. or Dini
tro at Vi gal. A. improved the
broadleaf control perform
ance of balan from 26 to 92
per cent, Vernam from 61 to
98 per cent, Balan-Yeraam
from 75 to 94 per cent and
Planavin from 73 to 94 per
cent. Where both grass and
weeds were equally import
ant all three of the at-crack
ing treatments increased both
grass and weed control by
10-25 percentage points.
The choice of which at
cracking treatment to use
then would depend on the
grass and weed problem to be
controlled and ithe relative
cost of each material. In
many cases, growers use a
lower rate cf these materials
than was used in these tests.
In peanuts where Vernam
is used to control nut grass,
there is usually still nut.

INTRICATE WOVEN STEEL—The Burlington Industries executive office building in
Greensboro is an intricate pattern woven with steel. Exposed steel trusses weighing IN
tons each and surrounding the topss-Unted mirror walls shown in building model, give
the structure the appearance of s glass cube suspended within a steel cradle. Fabri
cated from steel supplied from V. S. Steel, each of the 75 feet by 176 feet steel trusses was
completely assembled in. the Colfax pliant of the Carolina Steel Corporation before ship
ment to the site for erection. The Charlotte firm of A. G. Odell, Jr„ A Associates, de
signed the unusual building in which the floors are suspended from a steel roof frame.
