Street, is a graduate of John
A. Holmes High School and
■Wfeke Forest University. He
has served as pastor of Cullen
Baptist Church and Union
Grove Baptist Church in Vir
ginia and as associate minis
ter cf the Franklin Baptist
Church, Franklin, Va. He is
now the minister of the Chat
ham Baptist Church, Chat
ham, Va.

the former Donna Raper of

LETTERS TO
THE EDITOR
Dear Sir:
As you know, May 12 wa
registration day for childrer
entering the first grade in
September. As the parent of
a child six years old, I went
to the school, to register bfim.
After finishing the required
forms, I was asked if 1 plan
ned to enroll my child in the
summer program.
(Having previously - thought
, about this, I had decided! that
this program would be good
preparation (for a pre-schoolei
especially since Ours was a
late comer and had been rear
ed in a household of adults.
I thought this summer pro
gram would prepare him for
regular classes as well as
mixing with other chcldren.
So, along with a lot of oth
er mothers, I began what was
to be a 45-minute wait in line
to fill out the forms for the
program. Imagine my sur
prise when, after the long
wait and two pages of ques
tions, I was told 1 would be
notified by mail if my child
qualified.
■ I was not aware there were
restrictions, so I asked what
they 'Were. I was only told
there were guidelines for this
program and there were
doubts that we would qualify
because our income was too
high.
To say I was surprised is
putting it mildly. 1 canno'.
see what our yearly earnings
have to do with preparing a
child for entering school. I
cannot comprehend a taxpay
er being denied the right to
take part in a program which
is paid for by the taxes we
pay. This just doesn’t make
I sense.
I But the thing lam protest
ing imost is this: If there
were restrictions to this pro
gram, we should have been
told in advance, so that we
would not have stood in line
•for 45 minutes and wasted the
time of the person filling out
the forms, as well as our own.
I, for one, do not enjoy stand
ing around for 45 minutes. I
resent it and I’m sure I was
not the only parent this hap
pened to.
We are encouraged to send
our children to public schools.
Then from the very first mo
ment we are alienated and
embarrassed.
We had decided public
schools would be best for our
child. But now we feel he
has been discriminated against
before he even starts first
grade.
1 Therefore, we are now con
idering putting him in priv
ate school where he will be
given the same privileges as
any other student.
Byway of your newspaper,
I am exercising my right to
gripe. And to inform people
that integration is not the
iieason some children are put
iin private. schools.
