26 YEARS AGO
After being a patient in
Chowan Hospital for about 12
weeks, a drive was started to
save the life of Daisy Alice
Ward, when about 63 per
cent of her skin was burned
when she was washing
clothes and her dress caught
fire from an overheated
stove. The drive was headed
by W. E. Debnair., prominent
radio news commentator. To
save the girl’s life it was ne
cessary to secure blood, skin
and money. J. M. Boyce was
the first person to donate
skin for the purpose of graft
ing.
In a second opening of bids
for a new white high school,
Edenton school trustees re
ported to the County Com
missioners that the lowest
bids were about $45,000 above
the amount of money avail
able for the school. The
Commissioners saw no way to
raise the extra money unless
the tax rate was boosted, so
that a special meeting was
expected to be called to de
termine if ways could be
worked out to raise foe ne
cessary money.
