The baccalaureate sermon was preached by Dr. John Howell, minister of First Baptist Church in Washing ton, D. C., Sunday morning in .Jones Auditorium on the '(campus. Commencement cere monies were held in the Elva Bryan Melver Amphitheater. The commencement address was delivered by Dr. William C. Archie, executive director of the Mary Reynolds Bab cock Foundation, Inc., in Winston-Salem. Hiss George was a home economics major. While a Meredith student, she was Stunt co-chairman, business manager of the Oak Leaves, the school yearbook, treasurer of the BSU, and a member of the home eco nomics club and the Philare tia Society. Wilson Merchant Cited As “Retailer Os Year” RALEIGH—Joe Barshay of Wilson Monday was announc ed as 1970’s “Retailer of the Year” by Carl V. Venters, Jr., president of the N. C. Association of Broadcasters. The award is jointly spon sored with the N. C. Merch ants Association'. Venters will present a plaque to Barshay at the Merchants’ annual con vention at the Carolina Hotel in Pinehurst June 8 at their Presidents’ Luncheon. Barshay was selected by a committee headed by Clay Cline, general manager of Station WtDBM, Statesville. Members were C. Robert Ray, vice president of Alamance Broadcasting Company and general manager of Station WHBB, Burlington; Kermit Edney, president of Station WHKP, Hendersonville, and •Robert C. Currie, Jr., vice president and general man ager of WNBE-TV, New Bern. “Mr. Barshay has been a Wilson merchant for 36 years,” said Venters. “Start ing in the depression, he built his women’s fashion store to a point that he required a larg er building.
