Miss Iris Harrell Picked For Summer In Poland

the ambassadorship, will find
herself spinning around a
Russian satellite, Poland, lliss

“It was all luck!" exclaim
ed Miss Harrell, following an
nouncement of her selection.
She explained that her good
fortune stemmed from her
enrollment this year in a
class in European History
Since the Renaissance.
“If I hadn’t begged Dean
Moncure to let me into an
already filled night class at
University College I never
would have run into my pro
lessor, Patrick Harahan, when
he just happened to have the
Program applications tucked
under his arm.”
The 23-year-old graduate of
Mary Washington College has
found that classrooms can
open up a world of new ideas
to students and teachers alike.

major, I didn't really become
interested in world history
until I was assigned to teach
it this year,” she observed.
“Then I decided to start
studying for my masters in
Humanities, and signed up
tor Harahan’s European his
tory course.”
Both high school and col
lege courses will be some
what interrupted.
Mias Harrell will leave
June 6 for a 16-day introduc
tion to Polish at a language
camp in Vermont.
Afterwards she will spend
four weeks living with a Pol
ish family in Danzig, e week
traveling in Poland, and a
week visiting as many border
countries as possible.
“Thank heavens, Poland is
on the Baltic,” the Virginia
Beadi native exclaimed.

tire summer away (from the
water?”
Besides her bathing suit
and a letter from Mayor Bag
ley to the mayor of Danzig,
Kennedy half dollars, bubble
gum, and a couple of tubes of
toothpaste will help pack her
40 pounds of luggage.
“Europeans are said to be

ways of packaging and with
our instant mixes.

“The temperature in Poland
averages about SO degrees,
and right now the only other
item of clothing I know Pm
going to take is my rain
coat," she added with a
laugh

Harrell expressed no concern
over her prospective summer
diet
"Cabbage is to Poland
what steak is to America.
“But that’s just North Ca
rolina food to me,” she noted,
adding quickly that her early
childhood was spent in Eden

fish.
“But maybe it will taste
differently over there, com
ing out of different waters.
“The lobster from Japan

has always had on* foot in
the rood, be it merely at
tending the clean-up cam
paign at Monroe Park last
month, or traveling to such
places as Canada, Nantucket,
Daytona and Miami.
“1 love to travel and ex
plore new places,” she said,
recalling that she had previ
ously planned to spend this
summer seeing the western
United States.

have a distorted view of each
other, and, for one thing, the
Communists need to see
that the Americans can be
