PAGE SIX-B £t Among the important leg islation considered by the House for the week ending June 5 was a bill to increase the public debt limit. The bill as passed increased the permanent debt ceiling freon $365 billion to S3BO billion. It further provided for a tem porary increase of sls billion for the fiscal year ending June 30, 1971, making an overall limitation of $395 bil lion for the first year, then reverting back to 380 billion. This raising of the debt ceil ing has become an annual event What H does is to provide additional borrowing power to make payments for obligations already incurred. I voted no on final passage in the belief that unless the Congress adamantly cur tails questionable expendi tures, then there can be no end to the drastic inflation ary spiral we are now ex periencing. The Foreign Aid appropria tions bill was also approved by the House by a vote of 192 to 152, in the amount of $2,120,961,000, which repre sented a reduction of $655 million from the original budget request this was also the smallest appropriation for foreign aid since 1956. Al though the committee had re duced the appropriation from the original request, the House further reduced the amount by withholding the SBO million requested for Hie Peace Corps. Consistent with any votes since being in Con gress, 1 was opposed to this, and expressed this opposition through the legislative me chanics of a “pair.” 1 shall continue this negative vote until such time as I am sat isfied that the dollars of the American taxpayers are achieving the original intent of this program. In a recent column I re ferred to the approval of so cial security amendments pro viding for an increase to some 26.2 million benefici aries. An unusual feature of this legislation was the House approval of an amend ment to the bill which would give the sole power of in creasing social security taxes as well as benefits based on projected cost of living in creases, to the President of the United States through the secretary of HEW. This is in direct contradictiton to the United States Constitution which has vested in the House of Representatives ex clusive jurisdiction in the matter of tax legislation. With a firm belief in the validity of the United States Consti tution, on this motion to in clude this provision, I voted no, as did five other mem- MR. FARMER! Make Going To Church A Habit MAKING WORSHIP MEANINGFUL International Sunday School Lesson lor June 14 Memory Selection: “Let all tilings be done decently and in order.”—Corinthians 14:40. Lesson Text: I Corinthians 11; 14. No writer in the Bible has been more exten sively quoted then Paul. A man of intense con viction, of vision, and gifted with the power of soaring rhetoric, he was; indeed, an able advo cate on behalf of Jesus Christ and the glory of God. There is, therefore, much to be learned from Paul’s interpretation of the importance of public worship within the fellowship of the Church. Fcr, ostensibly, in the attendance of a service of worship under a roof that is truly and sin cerely dedicated to God, a sense of fellowship, of well-being, of gratitude, of comfort, of spirit ual sustenance, of sharing, and of love and re sponsibility should be present and tangible to whomever raters those portals whether it be member or visitor. So very much depends on one’s personal atti tude, one’s personal beliefs. Like everything else in life, one gets out of it, in exact measure, what one is willing to put into it Hie truly motivated Christian sees worship not as a retreat from the realities of his life, but as the only intelligent response to reality that he can give; the reality of God’s sacrificial love; the reality of Christ’s concern, humility, and obedience. Worship—what are the connotation of that word? Adoration? Yes! Humility? Yes! Gratitude? Yes! True worship personifies all that is up lifting in the human spirit But all these tilings must be present in our consciousness, or they become unmeaningful and ineffectual despite our physical appearance in public in the church of our choice. If we do not enter into a service with the proper and receptive attitude, we do not leave spiritually enriched; nor, surely, can God be heartened by our attendance. IFor He sees ALL things, and into EVERY heart God is, indeed, the ultimate explanation of WHY men worship—for worship is, essentially, a response to God’s presence. In most churches of our time the Sacrament of Holy Communion is observed. As the wafer fHis body) is shared, and as the wine .His blood) is offered and received, the solemnity of the occasion will not escape the receptive spirit. Received within the fellowship of the church, it is shared in fellowship. The church is stronger for the banding together of its mem bers, and therefore more effective in doing God’s work. Worship should be a drawing together of kindred spirts, an inner renewal, an affirmation and a concerted answer to the greatest challenge mankind has ever known.
