PAGE EIGHT-B Letter To The Editor Editor Chowan Herald: Recently I read in ‘'Letters to the Editor” a letter ad dressed to all responsible ci tizens urging them to strike out in protest against our President through a letter to their Congressman. Ad ter much thought, 1 decided someone should project still another view before these re sponsible citizens come to any hasty conclusions about •their college age youth. The entire article from that May 14, 1970, issue seems to infer that the Cambodia move and the action taken by the Guard at Kent State was perhaps idiotic and that this nation simply needs a ©""""'•""•••••'•■IIMUMIMlinilll,,,,, --- IIHUUUHIUUIHiiiiuMIIIIhhihhmIMIIHUI iiihCl Sunday, junhis^ Pipe Lighters Pipe Racks Cigarette Lighters Cameras Timex Watches Whitman Candy -Shaving Lotions- Yardley, Old Spice Stag, That Man Jade East, Yu Royal Argentia, Yorktown 1 Royal Regiment, Afta Skin Bracer, Top Brass Dante, Cricket Jean Nate, Lime Wood Sun Up, Aqua Yelva Chanel, Jaguar 007, Golden Sovereign ! Scott in Raleigh. The author of that article intend ed to remedy this situation by “attending rallies, organi zational meetings, and even liberation classes.” Let us first review the facts concerning the Cam bodia move. In the early 1960’s U. S. troops were call ed into South Vietnam to help stop the communist ag gression that threatened that country’s very existence. Since that time, one of the primary problems of the fighting man in Vietnam has been that of the enemy es- THE CHOWAN HXRALD, EDKNTON, NORTH CAROLINA, THURSDAY, JUNE 11, I*7B. caping into Cambodia an i area where V. S. troops arc i forbidden to enter. Many I battles resembled a tag team ] wrestling snatch. The enemy 1 would exhaust U. S. fighting ; men with countless attacks, then rush out of the “ring" into Cambodia to let the “fresh” enemy troops come in and continue the fighting. Because the enemy had this advantage, he killed many Americans. May I remind the author of the May 14 article that many of these men were from North Carolina. To provide the American fighting man with added protection, President Nixon’s military aides advis ed him to send troops into Cambodia. This he did, and once inside these troops found countless caches of munitions and weapons that lay waiting for the users to take into South Vietnam. In my opinion, this proves that President Nixon’s move was a wise one. Many lives will be saved and, more than likely, the enemy will be forced to make a speedy re treat to higher ground. Os course, the President and his military aides (all graduates of military academies and veterans of many battles) may not be as wise concern ing military science as those who have been educated at “liberation classes” on some college campus or “marched three miles through the streets cf Raleigh.” The author also mentioned that the deaths at Kent State were not necessary. I agree, but may I also remind the reader that the stone, brick and Molatov cocktail throw ing was a little uncalled for. The fact that is overlooked is th a t National Guardsmen fired because their lives were in danger, also that the order to cease fire came almost im mediately. One might pause to ponder what might have happened had this taken place in Russia. Communism is at work in this country in the worst way. It can be found in our high schools, our colleges, our jobs, and even sometimes in our places of worship. The sad fact is that communism doesn’t appear in the form of a red uniformed guard pointing a rifle at you and yours, but can sometimes be an enticing lure for the eas ily swayed. Communism works through a high school student who wants to legalize marajuana, a college student who believes we should do away with the “establish ment,” a group of people who would have a guaranteed yearly wage for the non worker!; and workers alike, and in some cases in a minis ter who stands in front of his congregation to protest the policies of our government. I agree 100 per cent that all people who disagree vio lently with the policies of our government do not wear loud clothes and long hair in Vietnam they wear straw hats and black pajamas. The article was closed by encouraging all citizens to get involved Too many of our young people think this means protest it doesn’t matter what you protest or if you have a solution to the prob lem, just protest and be counted. Still others have a more definite goal, that of destroying the powers that govern our nation. If they believe in the Bible, let me remind such people that the Apostle Peter wrote in II Peter, chapter 2, verses 9 and 10 that people who did this sort of thing could expect punishment instead of reward on the day of judgment. In 11 Peter, chapter 2, verse 12, he says that such people are “natural brute beasts, made to be taken and destroyed, (they) speak evil of the things that they understand Commission Okays Proposed 17 Bypass State Highway Commission has approved the proposed corridor location of the U. 8. 17 by-pass of Eden ton. This approved corridor is the same as recommended by the state at the public hear ing here on February 23. The proposed, by-pass be gins at the east end of Cho wan 'River bridge, follows ex isting U. S. 17 for a short distance and then is on new location north of Eden ton. If these people cere so muds for loving everyone, why must they show their love in such a violent manner? I harbor no ill feelings tor the author of that May 14 ar ticle. Certainly, die should be congratulated for taking a stand even if it was a bit un patriotic. Someone once said that if you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anyt hing, but the author cf the May 14 article, like many oth ers of our age group, has been misguided into her stand. Government is made up of the citizens. If the ci tizens don’t support the gov ernment, it soon falls, and if the government falls, so does the country. I am a native bom Ameri can, I believe in God, I am a Vietnam veteran, and I am presently training men for duty in Vietnam. 1 am only 23 years old, but 1 am as proud of these four facts as any 90-year-old could ever be. Because of my back ground and because of my love for my country, it is im perative that I, too, take a stand—l’ll stand with my commander in chief. What about you, citizen, will you stand with the President or will you foDow the Judas Goat to the slaughter house? S/Sgt. F. T. DANNELLY, U. S.
