M. THOMPSON County Extenston Chairman Hog cholera has been diag nosed in this area. Precau tions to prevent the spread of this disease are in order. If we are to avoid an epidemic this summer, it will take the cooperation of everyone, farmers, feed dealers, buying stations, agricultural workers and all others connected with ■the swine industry. Here are seme DO’s and DONTs that might help prevent the spread of this disease. (DO—stay away from other people’s hogs. If your neigh bor asks you to look at some sick hogs, don’t go. DO—be sure to disinfect your feet when entering your hog house, particularly if you have been to a hog sale or other place hogs may have been. DO—report sick hogs to your vet as soon as you notice any symptoms. This could be very important to you if it becomes necessary for you to receive indemnity pay ments if you do have hog cholera. iDO—isolate all new stock and be sure that a permit is given to you when you buy animals to bring back to the farm, whether they be feeder or breeding stock. DONT—let anyone into your farrowing house or feeding floor this should apply to friends, neighbors and visitors, Let’s all work together and prevent the spread of hog cholera in Chowan County. European corn borer has been found cm some of the com in Chowan County. Prop er management is usually the best preventative for this particular insect. It is pos sible to get some control from spraying Sevin in the whorls of the corn plant. We are recommending two pounds of 60 per cent Sevin to the acre if you are at- tempting to control this pen with insecticides. If you have any questions, plectoe let us know.
