K I *OO 1M USA OP Mil ou.,i jRo-n \ v Around The Farms In Chowan County By R. M. THOMPSON County Extension Chairman If you used either of the systemics to control thrips in your peanuts, you have prob ably noticed yellow spots on itta tsiunan aaanM>i avaitiw, >««nmu the edges of the leaves in your peanut patch. Dry weather makes this show up more severely than if we had had average moisture for the month of June. Even where these spots are showing there are beginning to be signs of thrip damage in the peanuts. In some cases the damage has already begun to hurt by the time it is real noticeable as the leaves are scarred and the plant stops growing. When it is severe enough, it is thi same as waiting (for planting as there is not any maturing cr growth occurring. When young plants are attacked by a large number of thrips, new growth is damaged causing stunting and consequently yields are reduced. For this reason, it is time that we con sider starting the dusting pro gram to control thrips. Sev en is the insecticide that is cleared and can be either ap plied as a spray or a dust. If you are not ready to begin your regular dusting program for leaf spot, Sevin by itself can be applied. Jt is also very noticeable that peanuts are blooming and this brings on the time that we consider using land plaster. For those that con sider two applications of land plaster beneficial, we suggest 400 pounds for each application. For those that do a good job of covering Uk whole entire row with lan ' plaster 800 to 1,000 pounds is considered adequate. With ■the runner type peanuts, ct least 20” across the top should be covered with land plaster while with the bunch type a 16” band prop erly applied seems to be ade quate. We feel that on light sandy land proper application of land plaster is a must to receive maximum benefits. If you are considering other methods of applying calcium this year, and there seems to be quite a bit of interest in it, our suggestion is to follow the program recommended on the label and compare the re sults with the methods you have been using in the past. Regardless of which source you use. be sure and apply material in the method that the label suggests so that you can receive maximum bene fits. DO’s AND DO NTs In order to help prevent the spread of hog cholera, here are a few suggestions: •DO—.Have a special pair of boots or shoes to wear when feeding or working around your hogs. Change shoes when you finish. This will help to prevent you “bringing it heme.” DO—Be informed of all rules and follow them. DO—Report sick hogs to your veterinarian at once. Suspect cholera iirst and hope it isn’t. The sooner cholera is diagnosed, the better the chance of preventing its spread. DO—Cooperate with veter inarians if you are in a quar antine area. Answer all questions as fully as you can. Help them to help you. DON’T—Visit other hog op erations or allow visitors to your hog operation. DON’T—Get curious. If you hear of hog cholera, don’t go see what it looks like. You may learn from painful ex perience. DON’T—Feed any garbage or table scraps. DON’T—M ov e any hogs without a permit except hogs going to slaughter that are not in the quarantine area. from HoHoweH’s i * Rexall Drug Store Babies will get less air in their tummies, and suffer less discomfort, if they are kept vertical when being nursed or bottle fed.
