PAGE SIX-B RECREATION NEWS Program Par North Oakum Street Playground The North Oakum Street Recreation Park will be open daily under the supervision of Robert P. Shields. We are encouraging parents to send their children out to the play ground. Games are not only being sponsored for boys and girls, but for adults also. There will be different games in which you can participate. These will include softball, Volleyball, tennis, kickball, basketball and badminton. Summer Basketball June 9 In the first game the Cel tics defeated the Hawks 60-32. Charlie Fay ton led the Celtics with 26 points. Steve Leary scored 20 and Willie Moore chipped in with 18. John Raines led the Hawks with 12 points. >ln the second game the Bucks defeated the Knicks 55-54. Tony Leary led the Bucks with 23 points. Blount Shepard chipped in with 15. John Blount led the Knicks with 21 points. Adonis Leigh, Leonard Small and George Riddick each scored 11. June 11 'ln the first game the Bucks pushed their record to 2-0 by defeating the Hawks 57-44. Blount Shepard led the win ners with 19 points. Jeff Covington scored 13. Robin Kanipe led the Hawks with with 15 points. John Raines scored 14 points. In the second game the Celtics also ran their record to 2-0 by defeating the Knicks 67-47. Charlie Fayton led the Celtics with 33 points. Rudy Foxwell chipped in with 15. John Blount led the Knicks with 21 points. George Riddick added 18. Summer Baseball Program The week of June 8-12 was used for registration and practice for baseball and was concluded with the organiza tion of three leagues com posed cf 11 teams. The leagues formed were the Knee Pant League for boys eight and nine years old; Little League for boys 10-12, and Teener League for boys 14-16. Knee Pant League The Knee Pant League, composed of four teams, open ed up Monday with the Astros defeating the Padres 4 to 3. |On Tuesday the Angels were defeated by the Senators 3 to 2. These games are play ed daily at 1:30. Little League Four teams make up the Little League and games are played at 10 o’clock daily. Competition began Monday with the Dodgers defeating the Orioles 14 to 2. Gerald Hall was the winning pitcher, pitching a four-hitter and striking out eight. On Tues o’ay Curt Gaskins pitched the Twins to a 7 to 1 victory over the Braves. Daryl Joy ner led both teams in hitting I with a 4-for-4 day at the ' plate. Teener League After three days of practice three Teener League teams were formed. Regular sea son games will begin Wed nesday, June 17, at 7 P. M. on Hicks Field. Games are scheduled on Mondays at the I Chowan High School field and on Wednesdays at Hicks Field. Come out and support ■ these teams.- ] Men’s softball began Tues day night, June 16. Two games will be played each Tuesday, Thursday and Fri day night at 7 and 8:45 o’clock. The league is com posed of seven teams: Car ter’s Ink, Cotton Mill, Ellis Tile, Hospital, Jaycees, Na tional Guard and United 1 Piece & Dye Works.
