PAGE SIX-B HAUNTED MEMORIES By MARY LIZZIE LANE I was young just in my early life, Don’t guess I’d ever dated him but once or twice. When my blond haired boy friend said to me, If you’ll be my wife we’ll be happy as can be. I was young and didn’t know, I told him I’d have to let him go. He said I’ll go away and get work And I’ll never, never shirk. I’ll come back to you some day When you’re old enough to have your way. , But soon an alcoholic he became, I really pray I was not to blame. My courting days had just begun, And those days were so much fun. We were both young and so carefree, I can remember the words he often spoke to me. I owe this to that boy, I know, Although his body is dead and cold. In that cemetary many miles away, Where he lays beneath the soggy clay. I was just in grammar school, you see, And the world had so much to offer me. I hadn’t had the time to shop around, There were so many boys to be found. Some boys are more serious than others,- you see, When they kneel down on their knees. I know his heart was aflame, I thought of it'as only a game. You take a girl that has just entered her teens, She doesn't understand these grown up things. If I could call back the past, you see, Everything would look so different to me. He was a gentleman from the start, With a very tender and loving heart. Now these memories must linger on Until the setting of the sun. The last words I can recall, He said I hate to say good-by to you all. Now he’s gone out into eternity, I know, And things of this nature has made me grow slow. Around Chowan County Farms By R. M. THOMPSON County Extension Chairman There are some peanuts and soybeans that are turning yellow due to manganese de ficiency. This usually occurs when there is an old lime pile or too much lime was ap plied. This is one reason why soil sampling is very neces sary. Fortunately in the case of peanuts or soybeans the rem edy is simple and inexpen sive. This involves spraying manganese-sulfate directly on the foliage. This will bring back the green color and cause the plan to begin grow ing again. By applying man ganese on soybeans the yield has been increased by as much as 29 bushels per acre. The symptoms of the plant that there is a deficiency in manganese are: the plant is stunted, the leaves are yellow It looks expensive, but only you and BASNIGHT will know how little it really costs Pitt Armstrong VIISIYL CORLON* CORRIE MARBLE™ ...
