Letters To The
Editor:
Franklin, Va.,
June 30, 1970.
We enclose a check for
$4.50 to continue our sub
scription to The Chowan
Herald. Stumbling along the
‘Public Parade” the other
day I came across an inter
esting if act. The storm sig
nals at Edenton are not post
ed on weekends. Last sum
mer and again this summer
on weekend sailing expedi
tions on the Sound and in
Edenton Bay, I have been
watching that mast with all
confidence. I watched again
on Sunday, June 21, when
there was enough wind to
sail the Courthouse (and
enough rain to sink it) but
nary a rag on the trusted
mast.
Pleasure boating is on the
increase in the Edenton area.
The folks at the Marina, as
well as the other boaters
we’ve -met, couldn’t be any
nicer, but ,1 sure would like
to see those warnings oper
ated on the weekends when
most boaters are out. How
about the police?

Fire Howie Visit
Seen Eduihitintiril _
A trip to the local fire depart
ment may be one of the best
and least painful ways to teach
your children the importance
of good fire safety habits, says
the Insurance Information In
stitute.
For children, a trip to a fire
station offers not only educa
tion, but also fun. Most local
fire departments welcome the
opportunity to show the kids
around, give them a chance to
climb onto the fire apparatus,
and back up your instructions
to the youngsters about what to
do in case of fire.
It’s a good idea to arrange
such a visit in advance to make
sure there’s a fireman on hand
to talk to the children.
White Collar Workers Unionization
Declines for Second Straight Year
Unionization of white collar employees in private industry
experienced its second straight year of decline' in 1969. The
analysis' of National Labor Relations Board election figures
by the White Collar Report published by The Bureau of
National Affairs, Inc. shows that organizing continued to
decline from its nine-year peak in 1967.
Heavy election losses among technical employes’ and sales
mens’ units account for the drop. In these categories, unions
suffered 87 more election losses ami gained 1,835 fewer em-'
ployes than in 1968.
