This amendment would per mit custom slaughterers to buy and sell inspected meat > and meet food products with out losing the exemption they . currently have under the act It would also continue an ex emption for owners to slaugh ter and process their own animals for their own use; provide that the secretory could exempt custom slaugh tering and processing per formed by an inspected es tablishment; and specifically require for consumer protec tion that any custom-slaugh tered articles he clearly marked as “not for sale.” It was found that the applica strued to weaken in any way the protection that the act affords customers. The House also felt the changes would provide hunters and the na tion’s game industry a neces i sary and desirable service. I The U. S. Department of *Ag * riculture concurred with the ■ changes. The House also approved an authorization for the con troversial Peace Corps for fiscal 1971 in the amount of 1 <596,800.00. I supported an I amendment, which was un successful, to cut this amount ;by $29 million. We were successful, however, in re taining language which would prohibit bringing students j from foreign countries into jthe United States under a < | plan sometimes referred to as ' a “reverse Peace Corps.” ' Quite often I have referred : to the importance of a sound 1 program in oceanography and the potential benefits to the 1 : fields of food, fuel, medicines i and other derivatives from 1 the oceans. Congress continues to con sider the Postal Reform Bill The House version, passed a few weeks ago, contained the right-to-work provision, while the Senate deleted this. On Thursday, by a vote of 22S yeas to 100 nays, the House insisted that its conferees not agree with the Senate, there fore insisting on the right-to work provision remaining in the law. Congressman David Henderson of North Carolina, chairman of the subcommit tee on this subject, was the chief proponent of this sec tion of the legislation. All North Carolina members vot ed to sustain the House po sition.
