Sports Afield By Ted Kesting By TED KESTING man who wants to . purchase a young gun - dog proapect and start his field •j training during the coining hunting season faces a diffi cult decision at this time of year. Should he buy a very young pup whelped during the early months of this year, or should he wait a couple of | months and select an older Ipuppy? There are some good £ ifeasons for choosing the lat | ter course of action. Ilf owned by responsible and thoughtful, breeders, early whelped puppies will, by summer, have been given vaccinations against distem per and sorte other diseases; will have developed enough physically to give the pros pective purchaser a good idea of what they will look | like in later life; and if any f, faults of conformation that | may weaken or mar the dog lin the future exist, they will | likely to be revealed by | summer. M ®est of all, by careful ob- one may get a very good idea of the future dispo sition of the prospect at inter est And this is extremely important. \ Be sure your prospect comes from parents, or at least grandparents that have ' proved themselves as good gun dogs, it is not always ' possible, but if you can do it it is well to see at least one of these parents perform inj ■the field. Check on their field records. They need not be field-trial contenders, but if they have established repu tations as good gun dogs your chances of getting a good field performer are better. And make M a point to see your prospective purchase in the field and away from his home kennel. Have the seller take him ant into the open if only for a‘ run. If he shows a tendency to investigate his new surroundings, is not afraid to get away from the immediate vicinity of his ;■ owner, goes out on the run, shows some curiosity about - different and strange scents :■ and is not overawed by the ■ new territory, he should be • considered a good pros ■. pect. Be wary of the young ster who sticks to the heels . of his owner and evidences ■no interest’in or even a tim 1. Wily toward his strange, sur .romtfmgsr No youngster is 1 going to feel at home in new . A healthy interest is enough to expect. And take him out alone, not with another puppy. If your chosen puppy is from one of the retriever breeds, lock for alertness, friendliness, a certain amount of boldness and an even temperament. If he shows a natural desire to re trieve and has a habit of picking up objects and carry ing them around, so much the better. • SPECIAL LOW RETAIL GALA I V. In a young spaniel look for alertness, a considerable amount of self-confidencc and good quick action. Boldness is also important. In hound puppies, be wary of the shy puppy. Beagle puppies are not usually over ly bold, but look for one that carries himself well and seems pretty sure of his J ground. Alertness and inqui sitiveness are qualities to be desired in the beagle breed. 1 (Make sure your puppy is ] in healtfiy condition, hss ro- 1 ceived this vaccinations and is i not infested with a heavy < lot of worms. His coat should be in good condition, with a healthy sheen. A dull, list less coat can reflect some un healthy internal condition that may mean trouble soon. If he needs more vaccination shots, ascertain when they are due. And see that his regis tration papers are fully in order before you take him home. Henry P. Davis, Sporting Dogs editor for Sports Afield Magazine, suggests a good book on training, one that deals with your specific type of dog.
