A vote by the Commissioners was tied, so that Chairman D. M. Warren cast his vote in favor of a loan to erect the new building. Chowan County Commis sioners passed a resolution requesting the State Highway and Public Works Commis sion to improve the Long Beach .Road as requested by William B. Shepard. Though the 1940 census gave Edenton a population of 3,914, it was the opinion that more people than that were living here. A report from the local post office showed 4,914 people served by city carriers, besides 120 who had boxes and 116 general deliv ery patrons, so that it was [calculated that the population [was slightly over 5,000. W. D. Holmes, who had been seriously ill at his home for two weeks, remained in a critical condition. After 38 years in business i n Edenton, J. H. Jlolmes sold | his interest in the J. 11. | Holmes Company to L. Snyd er of Norfolk, Va. Mr. c Holmes’ reason for selling his i business was given as ill I health. The business was t started in 1902 with Mr. i Holmes and the late J. A. J. Maynard Fleetwood, 53, died at his home near Bethel after an illness of several months. Chowan County was in ! eluded in 29 North Carolina counties reporting no traffic fatalities for the first four months of the year. Sheriff J. A.
